LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Oredigger hitters
Rose Stuewe and
Shannon Perna drove the Colorado School of Mines Volleyball team to a 3-2 win against Colorado Christian on Saturday evening to close out the RMAC Power Pod at the CCU Event Center.
Stuewe finished with 21 kills on .340 hitting. Perna tallied a 17-kill, 11-dig double-double while producing a .500 attack percentage.
Madison Glassco did her part by providing nine kills and nine digs as well as three total blocks.
Emily Knight added 10 kills to the effort too. Also notable were 21 digs from
Jada Price, two service aces by Perna, and two more service aces off the hand of Megan Slaninka.
Morgan McChesney and Glassco rounded out the highlights with three total blocks apiece.
As a team, Mines (7-7, 1-4 RMAC) hit .297 on the attack. That offset 10 service aces and nine total blocks by Colorado Christian (6-9, 2-2 RMAC). The Oredigger defense limited CCU to a .281 hitting percentage. Saturday's match featured 28 ties and nine lead changes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Offense was the story of the first set which Colorado Christian won 25-21. Mines hit .306 and CCU hit .343. There were only four total blocks in the set between both teams. That led to a second set in which the Orediggers battled, but dropped an extra-points affair, 26-24. It was a gritty performance in game three that helped the visitors avoid the sweep. Neither team cracked .300 on the attack, but Stuewe and Knight did combined for nine kills in a 25-23 win. Both offenses returned in game four as the Orediggers went off with a .500 attack percentage while the Cougars hit .469. Mines forced a decisive fifth set by winning 25-22 behind seven more Stuewe kills. She committed no attack errors in the frame. The final set of the night featured six ties but no lead changes. Mines did not trail across 28 total points. Even though CCU tied the game 13-13, an Oredigger timeout led to back-to-back kills from Stuewe and Jansen to clinch the win.
