DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Swimming teams opened the 2024 portion of their campaign on Friday afternoon with a dual at the University of Denver.
Â
Mines dropped both sides of the dual to the NCAA Division I Pioneers. The Oredigger men recorded 88 compared to 168 by DU. Mines' women tallied 84 points as the Pioneer women racked up 172. It marked the first countable races for the Orediggers since they appeared at the TYR/CMU Invitational in the middle of November. Despite multiple individuals out with illness, Mines still found multiple bright spots in its return to action.
Â
Jordan Tierney topped the list with a blazing 1:05.46 at altitude in the 100-breast. That proved good enough for silver out of all competitors as she finished ahead of three other DU swimmers. Tierney also joined in the 200-medley relay, 50-free, and 200-breast. Her 2:26.87 in the later was third-fastest out of eight swimmers including five Pios.
Luca Burns continued his impressive season with true bronze in the 100-back, a solid 200-back, and two different relay legs.
Â
Elsewhere,
Jaron O'Grady posted the second-fastest 200-fly of the day as he touched the wall in 1:56.00. That proved better than three other DI swimmers. Back on the women's side,
Annie Osmun produced a 24.33 in the 50-free which was good enough for silver. In the men's 50-free,
Garrett Waite grabbed bronze in 21.20.
Â
Mines continues dual action next weekend at Air Force with an 11 a.m. gun on Saturday morning. A full preview and any live coverage information will be released the week leading up to the event.
