Campos’ Hat Trick Paces #1 Orediggers Against Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Looking to cap off an unbeaten season away from home, the top-ranked Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team lined up opposite Adams State Sunday afternoon. Despite being held scoreless through the opening half, the Orediggers (15-0-1, 9-0-1) more than made up for it over the final 45 minutes as Bella Campos broke out for three goals to secure a 3-1 win over the Grizzlies (2-11-1, 0-9-0).

Mines got their offense going early and often as the match began, putting up eight shots in the opening 27 minutes and testing Ashlyn Bartley with four shots on goal from Sam Forde, Jolie Jiricek, Afton Rasco and Reese McDermott.

Despite putting up 13 total shot attempts in the opening period, the Orediggers were held off the board by Bartley as another flurry in the final 11 minutes of action saw Ellise Putnam, Callie Fuhr and Jordan Bowermaster take aim but come away empty as halftime arrived.

Coming out to start the second half, Mines wasted little time getting going on offense. A ball ahead up the far side from Lauren Clingman found its way to Campos on the other side of midfield. Campos dished to McDermott who took a few steps before passing back to the sophomore, splitting two defenders and setting her up for a sliding finish around 10 yards out for the opening goal of the afternoon.

With one goal down, a second was only a matter of time as in the 73rd minute, another free kick from Fuhr set the table. Playing this one from the near side of the field just wide of the penalty area, Fuhr's chip was headed home by Campos with ease past Bartley to double the lead to 2-0.

Moments later Campos struck again, winning a foot race against the defense on a long ball from Laura Butler and avoiding a sliding save attempt from Bartley to find the back of the net for the third time in the match.

The only blemish of the day came in the 83rd minute when Emily Ibsen headed home a long ball from the far sideline from Grace Abbott over the arms of Allie Lundgren to avoid the shutout but that goal did little to impact the result as another stifling defensive performance coupled with the big day from Campos secured a 3-1 win.

NOTABLES
-Campos' hat trick was the second of her career and first since the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals last fall against Fort Lewis and giving her double-digit goals for the second time in as many years
-The hat trick is the 19th all-time in program history as Campos becomes the just the fourth player in program history with at least two to her credit in a career
-With 26 goals now in her career, Campos takes over sole possession of sixth all-time from Jennifer Kendall (2015-18) and is one back of Nicole LaTourette (2016-19) for a spot in the top five; her 60 career points also places her in sole possession of sixth all-time passing Emily Garnier (2014-17) and is five back of LaTourette for fifth in that category as well
-While McDermott's scoring streak came to an end Sunday, she extended her points streak to seven matches with an assist on the opening goal from Campos
-Fuhr recorded her second assist in as many matches on the second Campos goal
-As a team, Mines allowed just two shots for the second time this weekend and third time this season
-The 9-0-1 mark on the road this season is the first unbeaten record away from home in the regular season since the abbreviated spring 2021 campaign in which Mines went 3-0-0 and is just the fourth time in program history that the feat has been accomplished
