GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –Distance swimmers were center stage on Wednesday night as the Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Swimming teams opened the 2024 TRY/CMU Invitational hosted by Colorado Mesa.

The men's and women's 1000-free were sandwiched between two different relays on the first evening of the four-day event, and the results yielded multiple NCAA qualifying times for the Orediggers. True freshman
Vladislav Kazakin topped the list for Mines. His bronze medal in the 1000-free came on the merits of a NCAA "B" time of 9:26.34. In the same race,
Joseph Lev-Tov,
Lucas Hoke,
Jaron O'Grady, and
Jake Sherman finished 7-8-9-10 with NCAA times as well.
Ronan Lauinger,
Andres Saa,
Cameron MacMillan, and
Mattie Oberley also raced in the 100-free for the Oredigger men. The women's edition of the distance event saw
Isabella Bono claim bronze as well with a NCAA time of 10:27.55. She was joined by
Julie Gill,
Eden Addison, and
Elizabeth Powers.

Bread (see sandwich reference) for the individual highlights was provided by relay events. The women's 200-medley started the entire event and Mines took fourth thanks to
Kerrigan Hemp,
Jordan Tierney,
Kylie VanderMeer, and
Sophia Cristal. The top medley relay for the Oredigger men was made up of
Luca Burns,
Joe Hutchinson,
Michael Kietzman, and
Sawyer Jones. That quartet finished third overall. In the 800-freestyle relay,
Jennifer Pierson,
Olivia Kisow,
Sophia Buhr, and
Maggie Wells led Mines to a fourth-place finish.
Gavin Moore,
Brenden Cook,
Ronan Lauinger, and
Vladislav Kazakin gave the Oredigger men bronze.

Team standings after one session are as follows. On the women's list its Colorado Mesa (229), Mines (144), Wyoming (120), Northern Arizona (108), and Utah (56). The men's standings include Colorado Mesa (219), Mines (154), Wyoming (126), and Utah (60).
