SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader, losing 8-1 before a 4-0 victory gave the Orediggers a series win at Cal State San Marcos.
Pitchers provided the story of the day after
Alex Honeyman (1-2) started game two and tossed 5.0 shutout innings on the way to the win. He allowed no runs on three hits and walked two while striking out five.
Marcus Lee (1) earned the save after he provided 2.0 innings of one-hit, shutout relief. Lee recorded three strikeouts compared to zero walks.
Ben Schoneman (0-2) started the first game of the doubleheader and second game of the series. He took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits across 4.0 innings. Schoneman struck out one and had zero walks.
Weston Siefken recorded one inning of nearly flawless relief.
Peter Lynch and
Jackson Kay also came out of the bullpen for the Orediggers.
At the plate,
Jackson Woolwine kept his team from a no-hitter in game one by smacking his second home run in as many days. Woolwine finished the doubleheader hitting .429 with three runs on three hits including one double, one triple, and a home run leading to three RBI. Cannon Humphreys,
I-Ly Hsue,
Wayne Moeck,
Luke Folsom, and
Tyler Pina notched one hit each as well. Humphreys also scored twice while Hsue and Folsom accounted for the other two RBI. Hsue added a double to cap the highlights.
The Orediggers (3-6) overcame a team batting average of .140 to win the series in the finale. Cal State San Marcos (1-4) totaled 16 hits, but scored all its runs in the first game of the day. The Cougars also committed three total errors in the field while Mines only had one. The Oredigger pitching staff recorded its first combined shutout of the season. For the day, Mines' arms struck out 10 batters and walked three. The CSUSM pitching staff recorded 21 strikeouts and walked eight batters.
GAME ONE: Cal State San Marcos 8, Mines 1
The first game of the day saw a promising start for the Orediggers. Woolwine hit a two-out, solo home run in the top of the first to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. However, that was the last of the offense for Mines. The Cougars no-hit their guests the rest of the way while adding two runs in the third, two more in the fourth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth. The Orediggers did load the bases in the top of the eighth thanks to two walks and a CSUSUM error. In the end, Mines could not overcome three doubles, one triple, and a home run from the Cougars.
GAME TWO: Mines 4, Cal State San Marcos 0
In the finale, the Orediggers put together another fast start. Humphreys led off the game with a walk, and Woolwine doubled to plate him. A Hsue double down the left-field line scored Woolwine and provided Mines with a 2-0 lead. The visitors wouldn't score again until the final frame, but Honeyman and the Oredigger defense took care of business to keep zeroes on the board. Cal State San Marcos managed a single in the second, and another in the third on a bunt. In the fourth, a hit batter with two outs followed by a single gave CSUSM its first baserunner in scoring position. However, a fly ball to left ended the threat. One walk in the bottom of the fifth provided no threat. Lee surrendered one single over the final two innings while striking out three en route to the combined shutout.
