SPEARFISH, S.D. - For the first time in program history, Colorado School of Mines' men's and women's track & field teams swept the team titles at the RMAC Indoor Championships as they held off challenges from UCCS to bring home a pair of championships.
The Oredigger women win their second consecutive team indoor title while the men claim their first since 2018 and sixth overall. The final medal haul from the meet includes eight gold, 10 silver, and eight bronze medals.
After winning four events on Friday, Mines crowned four more champions on Saturday as
Everett Delate cruised to a repeat 60m hurdles crown and
Aryelle Wright and
Tim Thompson swept the 800m runs, with Wright winning in a new RMAC Championship record time, the fifth set by the Orediggers in the meet. The women's 4x400, anchored by Wright running with
Randi Higashi,
Grace Galvin, and
Aani Hardesty, won gold to cap the meet.Â
With Friday's 5,000m title and silvers in the 3,000m and mile on Saturday,
Loic Scomparin was selected as the Men's Athlete of the Meet accounting for 26 team points.
It was a nail-biting team points race throughout the day after both Oredigger teams held big leads following Friday's session. UCCS overtook the Mines men in the mid-afternoon, and led 128.83 to 127 with only two events to go; the Mines 3K group scored 18 points, however, to give the Orediggers an unassailable lead as they edged the Mountain Lions 145 to 141.83, with Colorado Mesa third with 106.Â
Meanwhile, the Oredigger women held onto their lead from Friday despite UCCS' challenge, pulling away in the final few track events and clinching the team title with a 22-point performance in the 3K led by
Molly Maksin and
Zoe Baker's silver-bronze finish. They topped UCCS 154 to 119 with Colorado Mesa third at 81 points.
Scomparin led all pointscorers as he added a pair of silver medals on Saturday, none more important than in the 3,000m as Mines was behind in the team standings. Scomparin ran a furious final two laps to place second in 8:14.98, leading four Oredigger scorers with
Dawson Gunn closing fourth (8:21.34),
Duncan Fuehne fifth (8:26.43), and
Paul Knight eighth (8:32.86).
Daniel Appleford finished 12th in 8:38.74 with
Matt Mettler 13th in 8:39.67; the race results pushed Mines back in front for good.
The women's 3,000m clinched them the team title as well, dominated by Mines' depth as they scored five in the event.
Molly Maksin (9:51.07) and
Zoe Baker (9:55.95) got on the podium with silver and bronze, and
Holly Moser (5th, 10:00.22),
Margaux Basart (6th, 10:03.18), and
Ashleigh Loe (8th, 10:19.13) provided crucial depth.
Josie Mejia finished 13th (10:33.82) and
Callen Nash was 15th (10:46.43).
Delate earned his second consecutive RMAC 60m hurdles title, running 7.87 to cruise to first place in an event that saw Mines earn 14 team points.
Coulton Chan's 8.41 was good for sixth, and
Rhett Cullers scored a point in eighth at 8.43.Â
Wright won a blistering women's 800m final heat that saw the top three finishers all come in under the previous RMAC Championships record set in 1999. Wright ran down Fort Lewis' Katie Heck in the final 200 meters, ultimately winning in 2:09.68.
Imani Fernandez-Gorbea scored with a seventh-place 2:15.20, and
Avary Catchings came in 10th in 2:16.47. Moment later, Thompson led gun to tape for a track-record 1:52.89 to make it a Mines sweep of the 800m, capturing his first career RMAC gold in the men's race.Â
The women's 4x400 again saw Wright run down the leader in the final 100 meters, this time overtaking New Mexico Highlands' relay to give Mines its third consecutive 4x400 gold. Higashi, Galvin, Hardesty, and Wright combined for a 3:50.28, the second-fastest time in program history and a track record.Â
The Mines men picked up 19 points in the mile as Scomparin,
Alberto Campa, and
Brock Drengenberg finished 2-3-4 in the event. Scomparin and Campa did much of the early pacemaking and were in the mix in the final 200 to cross in 4:11.29 and 4:12.97, respectively, while Drengenberg held back early but closed strongly in 4:14.84.
Riley McGrath took silver in the women's mile, running 4:54.57 and coming back in the final straightaway to win a three-way sprint for second place.
Grace Strongman came in 10th in 5:11.20.Â
Brody Welch grabbed a critical silver medal late in the meet in the men's shot put, posting back-to-back-to-back personal bests in the finals to secure second place. Welch surpassed 16 meters for the first time in his career with marks of 16.07m, 16.18m, and 16.39m on consecutive throws, with his final one moving him from third to second. Freshman
Franklin Rambo also made finals and posted a PR of 15.12m to finish ninth. In the women's shot put,
Kitt Rupar matched her collegiate best of 13.91m on her third throw to put her into bronze medal position, and she wasn't challenged in finals to earn the podium spot.
Lexye Wood won bronze in the women's high jump to start the day, one of four competitors to make it over the 1.67m bar as she cleared her season best with only a single cumulative miss.
Grant Redmond was fourth in the men's high jump, getting over 2.07m before passing on 2.10m and bowing out at 2.13m.
Claire Kintzley made it to the finals of the triple jump out of the opening flight, finishing sixth with a best mark of 11.49m to pick up three team points.
Nicholas Nijkamp finished 10th in the men's event at 13.49m, his indoor best.
In sprint finals, Hardesty and
Allison Comer combined for six team points in the 400m, as Hardesty ran 58.00 flat for fifth and Comer 58.28 for seventh, and
Avery Wright was the lone Oredigger in the 60m dash final finishing eighth in 7.83 seconds.
The indoor season concludes with the NCAA Division II Championships at Pitt State on March 8-9; selections will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. 27.Â
