Orediggers Fall to #17 Southern Arkansas

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Three big innings were the demise of the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team on Sunday as the Orediggers close the Mike Dugan Collegiate Baseball Invitational with a 14-2, seven-inning loss to #17-ranked Southern Arkansas.

Jackson Woolwine, Luke Folsom, Brady Veltien, and Keene Tanaka all recorded one hit apiece. Folsom's was a double. Wayne Moeck and I-Ly Hsue both scored. Tanaka had a RBI. On the mound, Alex Honeyman (0-1) started and took the decision after giving up seven runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. He did strike out four batters. Marcus Lee, Carter Gorling, Weston Siefken, Seaver Newby, Jackson Kay, and Peter Lynch all appeared in relief. Newby posted no runs on no hits with no walks across 1.1 innings of work.

The Orediggers (0-2) were 4-of-24 at the plate and only had one hit for extra bases. Southern Arkansas (3-1) batted .406 with two doubles. Mines' pitching staff combined to strike out six batters, but walked eight. The Muleriders fanned nine batters and walked four. A total of 14 runners were left on base including six Orediggers and eight more for SAU. There were no errors committed on defense.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines had both of its games on Saturday canceled, but started Sunday looking no worse for wear. Honeyman cruised through the first two frames by striking out four batters. He only faced the minimum thanks to a pickoff play at first base from Tanaka to Ben Leiphart. In the bottom of the second, Hsue was hit by a pitch and then stole second. That set up a RBI single for Tanaka, giving the Orediggers a 1-0 lead. However, Southern Arkansas answered with eight runs in the third, three in the fifth, and three more in the seventh inning. Mines' only other run was Moeck scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning.
