Orediggers Score 22 Runs in Doubleheader Split with Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team scored 22 runs across two games on Saturday at Regis Baseball Field which resulted in an 11-10 loss in the opener and a 12-5 win on the backend.

I-Ly Hsue led the offense with a six-hit day including a 4-for-4 outing in the second game. He hit one double and one home run on the way to four runs and one RBI in the leadoff spot. Hsue stole one base as well. Evan Bilter and Mason Andrews both turned in four-hit days. Bilter was 4-for-8 including a double and a home run with four runs and five RBI. Andrews went 4-for-9, hit a home run, scored three times, and drove in two. Trent Nielsen and Luke Folsom each had three hits and a home run while combining for seven runs and six RBI. Also notable were two hits apiece for Jackson Woolwine, Canon Humphreys, and Tyler Pina. Woolwine scored three times and Pina had a home run and three RBI. Additionally, Nielsen and Woolwine drew three walks each.

Alex Honeyman and Ben Schoneman were the starting pitchers, but neither factored in their respective decisions. Jackson Bakovich (5-5) took the loss in the first game of the day. Marcus Lee earned the win behind 4.2 innings of one-run, three-hit relief. He had no strikeouts, but only walked one batter. Carter Gorling and Gray St. Amant also came out of the bullpen for the visitors. Ethan Sloan and Nick Jacobs were the pitchers of decision for the home team.

Overall, Mines (21-16, 14-9 RMAC) outhit Regis (19-17-1, 10-9 RMAC) by a 27-20 margin which resulted in a combined batting average of .415. The Rangers hit .351 with nine doubles and two home runs, but they committed four fielding errors and walked 10 batters through 14.0 innings on the mound. The Orediggers only had four doubles but totaled six home runs for a .754 slugging percentage. Their arms only fanned four and walked eight, but the production on offense helped offset three defensive miscues. Despite seven combined errors, only three of the 38 runs scored were unearned.

GAME ONE: Regis 11, Mines 10
The Orediggers scratched out one run on a wild pitch during their first turn at the plate. However, the Rangers stacked five runs in the first, another in the third, and four in the fourth. A one-run double off the bat of Folsom in the top of the fourth inning made the tally 10-2 with three frames left to play. As one might expect, Mines would not go quietly into the warm afternoon. Another Folsom double and Bilter's two-run home run highlighted a three-run fifth inning. The rally continued in the sixth when Nielsen's two-run home run off Ethan Sloan tied the game at 10. Unfortunately for the visitors, Regis scratched out one run on a groundball RBI in the bottom of the sixth. While Hsue did manage a two-out single in the top of the seventh, the Orediggers couldn't match the run and the final score was set.

GAME ONE: Mines 12, Regis 5
Latecomers to Regis Baseball Field would never have guessed the Orediggers had just suffered a heartbreaking loss after an incredible rally. Hsue doubled, Andrews singled, Woolwine singled, Folsom walked, Bilter singled, Nielsen singled, and Humphreys forced an error. That was all part of a four-run first inning for Mines. The Rangers responded by scoring four unanswered to tie the game at four after three full innings of action. But the top of the fourth put the visitors firmly back in the driver's seat.

Hsue and Andrews started the frame with back-to-back home runs. Woolwine walked and Regis changed pitchers, but it made no difference. Folsom homered after the switch and made the score 8-4 in favor of the visitors – capping long balls in three consecutive at-bats. Bilter continued the inning by hitting a single and Nielsen walked which setup Pina's three-run bomb. Finally, a two-out error by the home team allowed Hsue to score a second time, pushing Mines' advantage to 12-4. One run in the bottom of the fifth was all RU could muster. Lee and the Oredigger defense worked round a hit batter and a double in the sixth before retiring the Rangers, in order, on five pitches to close out the win.
