GOLDEN, Colo. – Oredigger pitcher
Weston Siefken dominated the day for the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team on Sunday as they split their doubleheader with Adams State, 15-28 and 6-2, at Jim Darden Field.
Siefken (2-0) started the finale and pitched a complete game, giving Mines (19-15, 12-8 RMAC) a four-game, series split against ASU (16-18, 11-5 RMAC). Siefken's seven-inning gem featured two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He used 105 pitches against 29 batters while drawing seven fly-outs and eight groundouts.
Ben Schoneman was the starting pitcher in Sunday's opener, but only managed two outs and did not factor in the decision.
Jackson Bakovich (5-4) took the loss.
Marcus Lee,
Matthew Dobberthien,
Jackson Kay, and
Peter Lynch all provided work out of the bullpen.
Oredigger efforts at the plate were headed by
Mason Andrews. He batted .500 for the day, scoring five runs on three hits with a home run and three RBI.
Tyler Pina also hit .500. He scored once and drove in two. Additional home runs came off the bats of
I-Ly Hsue and
Keene Tanaka. Also notable were two doubles from
Evan Bilter.
Jackson Woolwine,
Wayne Moeck,
Grant Johnson,
Joe Reitz, and
Alex Dunagan had doubles as well. Rounding out the highlights were Woolwine,
Luke Folsom, and Tanaka coming across the plate a total of seven times. Bilter, Woolwine, Folsom, Moeck, Hsue, and Tanaka each tallied multiple RBI.
Overall, Mines batted .385 for the day while Adams State turned in a .446 clip at the plate. The Orediggers slugged .631 on seven doubles and three home runs. The Grizzlies notched four doubles and seven home runs for a .747 slugging percentage. Staff ERAs calculated at 14.62 for the home team and 12.60 for the visitors. Mines suffered from six errors in the field, all in the first game. The Oredigger arms also struck out 10 and walked 10. Grizzly pitchers totaled 14 strikeouts and eight walks. There were only three stolen bases across 16 innings of baseball.
GAME ONE: Adams State 28, Mines 15
It seemed that all bats were red-hot and ready to go in the first two innings of Sunday's first game. The Grizzlies used their first six outs to score four runs. The Orediggers racked up eight runs across the first and second frames. After that, Mines' offense went frigid, but ASU stayed the course. Stacked zeroes on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings made little difference. Adams State scored four runs in the sixth, four in the seventh, four in the eighth, and 11 in the ninth. Tanaka's tank highlighted a five-run fifth for the home team. Doubles off the bats of Reitz and Johnson gave Mines a two-run ninth inning. In the end, 28 Grizzly runs on 29 hits and zero errors by the visitors proved a bit too much for the Orediggers to overcome.
GAME TWO: Mines 6, Adams State 2
The series finale saw a good amount of offense, but in reality the contest was completely the opposite of the prior game. Tanaka picked off an ASU baserunner and that helped Siefken work through two hits for a scoreless first inning. Bilter's two-out, two-run double afforded Mines a 2-0 lead after one complete. In the top of the second frame, a groundball double play canceled out a single and kept Adams State off the board. Andrews' three-run bomb in the bottom of the same inning pushed the Orediggers' lead to 5-0. The Grizzlies hit solo homeruns in the fourth and sixth innings. But Hsue drove in Dunagan in the bottom of the fourth while Siefken and Mines' defense cruised through the fifth and seventh innings. Siefken put the cherry on top of the Sunday finale by catching the last batter of the game looking for his fourth strikeout of the day.
