ERIE, Colo. - Led by an under-par
Colt Tenpenny, Colorado School of Mines held their own against a Division-I field as they began play at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational on Monday.
The only D-II team in the 19-team tournament at Colorado National Golf Club, the Orediggers just got done before dark to card team rounds of 301 and 294. A gusty cold front pushing through around lunchtime wreaked havoc on scores late in the first round, but Mines recovered well in the afternoon to shave seven strokes off their first-round total.
Tenpenny is tied for 38th at -1 on rounds of 71 and 72, keyed by an eagle on his second hole of the day after driving the green on the 364-yard par-4 17th.
Eric Casademont Vinyoles is next on the leaderboard for Mines at T84 (+6), bouncing back from an opening-round 77 to card a consistent 73 in closing.
Lukas Taggart also went lower after lunch with a second-round 74 to pair with his first-round 78, putting him in a tie for 90th at +8, and
Max Lange finds himself in the same spot on rounds of 77 and 75.
Lucas Schulte is +10 (T95) carding 76 and 78.
About half the field has a hole left to finish on Tuesday with the final round slated to tee off beginning at 8:30 a.m. The host Buffaloes lead the field at -27 followed by St. Mary's (Calif.) and -21 and Colorado State at -20; UTEP's Dylan Teeter is the top individual at -10.
