USAFA, Colo. – The nationally-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Swimming teams competed in a full day of racing on Saturday at Air Force in a dual for the men and a quad for the women.
Â
Outside of Mines, the entire field was made up of NCAA Division I swimmers. The Oredigger men went head-to-head with the host Falcons and fell by a score of 167-94. In their quad, Mines' women went up against Air Force, Northern Colorado, and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The final tallies had the Falcons and Bears winning by scores of 239-54 and 225-68, respectively. The Oredigger women earned a 190-87 victory over UTRGV. Despite multiple lopsided margins, Mines walked away with plenty of highlights.
Â
Julie Gill was a huge bright spot for Mines' women. She raced to straight-up silver in the 1000-free thanks to a time of 11:05.61. That raw mark came at more than 7,000 feet of elevation. Gill also added bronze in the 500-free with a time of 5:23.39 to cap a marathon-type day of distance racing. Also notable for the Oredigger women was
Jennifer Pierson who competed four different times. She was on Mines' top 200-medley relay, led the Orediggers in the 200-free, took bronze in the 100-free, and started off Mines' top 400-freestyle relay.
Â
On the men's side, a head-to-head dual provided opportunities for high finishes, and the Orediggers took advantage.
Vladislav Kazakin provided the first highlight with silver in the 1000-free. After that,
Jakson Winn and
Luca Burns swept gold and silver in the 100-back. Â
Jaron O'Grady's silver in the 200-fly led to gold for
Michael Kietzman in the 50-free. The 100-free brought another gold-silver sweep thanks to speedy races by Winn and Kietzman.
Ronan Lauinger showed out by claiming silver in the 200-IM. The Oredigger men capped a quality day with a first-place finish in the 400-freestyle relay. The winning quartet featured Kietzman,
Sawyer Jones, Kazakin, and Winn.
Â
Next weekend, Mines' men and women host Wyoming on Saturday at 11 a.m. It will also be Senior Day for the Orediggers with festivities beginning at 10:40 a.m. Free live results and video on the RMAC Network will be available at www.minesathletics.com.
