GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines wrapped up its non-conference schedule as Cal Poly Humboldt held on for a 25-19 win at Volk Gym on Friday.
Wrestling backups throughout the lineup, Mines (7-2) fell into a 21-0 hole after the first four weight classes as the Lumberjacks recorded three consecutive falls at 133, 141, and 149 pounds after winning a tight decision at 125.
The Orediggers showed no quit, though, and got back into the dual with five straight wins beginning at 157.
Jaron Mahler controlled his bout to defeat Gil Mossburg 13-6, and
Tristin David's late takedown delivered a 7-5 win over Cole Zoller at 165.
Garrett Bakarich needed only 58 seconds to pin Diego Robles at 174, and then
Avery Krippner secured a third-period takedown to turn a decision into a major to win 15-7 at 184.
That left Mines trailing 21-16, and
Jeffery Morosini gutted out a 7-3 decision over Manman Garner to make it a winner-take-all heavyweight bout between Carson Hatch and
Trevor Thorn. Hatch scored two first-period takedowns to control the bout, and added two more with a turn in the third period to win 17-3 and secure the dual for Cal Poly Humboldt.
Mines will head to CSU Pueblo next Friday night before hosting Western Colorado on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
