PUEBLO, Colo. -
Jakob Smith's pin keyed #16 Colorado School of Mines as they won six weight classes in a 24-12 victory at CSU Pueblo.
The Orediggers (8-2, 2-0 RMAC) stayed unbeaten in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as they now look ahead to Saturday's home clash with #13 Western Colorado, who were dealt their first conference loss Friday night at Chadron State.
Smith's fall at 165 pounds and #9
Christian Lopez's win by forfeit to start things at 125 were the only bonus points of the meet as the Orediggers and Thunderwolves (8-3, 3-1 RMAC) went the distance in the other eight weight classes.
After spotting Mines the 6-0 lead, CSUP's Eddie Bowman got the Pack on the board with a 7-3 decision over
Trebor Moreno at 133, but #4
Grayston DiBlasi returned the favor for Mines by the same score to beat Hayden Tuma at 141 and extend the lead to 9-3. A last-minute takedown gave Cole Bennett the 6-3 win over
Cole O'Brien at 149, but #11
Marcus Caro started a three-bout win streak for the visitors thanks to his 7-3 victory over Cyruss Meeks at 157.
Smith needed only 52 seconds to pin Aaron Concepcion, earning a takedown out of a scramble at the edge of the mat and then immediately turning and pinning his opponent off the ensuing restart. #14
Wyatt Reisz kept the momentum going with his 11-4 win over Solomon Arnds-Volcin at 174, punctuated by two third-period takedowns. At 184,
Mason Diel defended a second-period escape deep into the third period, but Donn Greer's late reversal into a nearfall-4 produced a 6-1 win for the Thunderwolves; Mines sealed up the dual win thanks to #12
Ryan Cody's high-scoring 15-11 victory over Remington Winmill at 197 as Cody scored three takedowns. Henry Sturn wrapped things up with his 7-3 victory over
Deandre Rucker at 285 pounds.
NOTABLES
- DiBlasi won his 90th career bout (90-25), becoming only the third wrestler in program history to reach that mark. He is 17-3 in his senior season.
- Caro became the first Oredigger to reach 20 wins this season, and is now 20-4 as a true freshman.
- Smith's fall was his third of the season as he improved to 4-0 in duals; he is averaging an impressive five team points per dual appearance.
- Mines won its fifth straight meeting against the Thunderwolves, winning Pueblo for only the fifth time since the series began in 1983.
- With Friday's other results, Mines (2-0) and Colorado Mesa (3-0) are left as the only two teams unbeaten in RMAC competition.
