RAPID CITY, S.D. - Colorado School of Mines came away with a hard-nosed road win in Week 6, defeating South Dakota Mines 24-14 at O'Harra Stadium.
The Orediggers (4-2, 2-2 RMAC) were led by
Joseph Capra's three-touchdown day, while the defense allowed a season-low 14 points to the Hardrockers (2-5, 2-3 RMAC)
Capra threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to
Nick Stone, while
Aksel Richard had a career-high 104 yards receiving and
Braelon Tate went off for 132 total yards and a receiving TD.
Dawson Dunbar led SDM with 117 rushing yards and a touchdown, and Mason Galbreath caught seven passes for 123 yards and a score. Quarterback Gage Baker threw for 182 yards and a touchdown with an interception to
William Brown.
The Orediggers scored on their opening possession when Capra found Stone on a short two-yard crossing route, but the Hardrockers responded with a pair of long Dunbar runs to set up his seven-yard scoring tote later in the first quarter.
Mines would get back ahead on their next possession, hitting a deep 47-yard pass to Richard before Capra found Stone on his second touchdown of the quarter; neither team managed to score in the second quarter with each side missing a field goal in the period.
In the third, the Orediggers were pinned at their own 1 but marched 99 yards on 15 plays to score on a short pass out to Tate, and
Preston Kyle's 32-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter made it 24-7. The Hardrockers cashed in on a 30-yard Baker pass to Galbreath on the next series to cut it to 24-14 with 9:39 to go, but a combination of clock management on offense and a stout defense helped Colorado School of Mines outlast their South Dakota counterparts.
