GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men's and women's swimming teams started the 2025 TYR/CMU Invitational Wednesday night with multiple record-breaking performances.
Â
The Oredigger women's quartet of
Mary Flikkema,
Cameryn Schmidt,
Kaya Flaherty, and
Sophia Cristal started the evening and the event with a record-breaking 200-medley relay. They posted a time of 1:42.59 which bested the previous record of 1:43.04 posted by
Kerrigan Hemp, Schmidt, Annie Osmun, and Jorie Selig at the conference meet in 2023.
Jakson Winn's leadoff in the men's 200-medley relay was a program record of 22.21 in the 50-back. He undercut
Luca Burns' 22.23 by just .02 seconds. Finally, in the women's 800-freestyle relay,
Ava LaBrose,
Jennifer Pierson,
Michelle Murphy, and
Anna Bream shattered the program record with a combined time of 7:31.61. The foursome for Mines' men in the distance relay was
Charlie Krone,
Brenden Cook,
Cameron MacMillan, and
Vladislav Kazakin. They tossed out a program record time of 6:40.87. Krone's leadoff, with adjustment for altitude, was also a program record at 1:38.03.
Â
It wasn't just program records for the Orediggers. Multiple Mines swimmers had NCAA "B" cuts as well.
Julie Gill's 10:23.29 was a NCAA time in the 1000-free and good enough for bronze.
Vladislav Kazakin won the men's 1000-free with a "B" time of 9:22.92.
Lucas Hoke and
Jackson Steider also had NCAA times in the same event, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Finally, in addition to the program record, the women's 800-freestyle relay also had a NCAA time which means they can swim at the national meet, no matter what.
Â
After one evening and one session of competition, the Oredigger men lead Colorado Mesa thanks to 207 points. Mines' women are second with 153 points, less than 100 back of first-place CMU and 21 ahead of NCAA Division I Northern Arizona.
