Day Three Results
Â
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Anna Bream,
Charlie Krone, and
Jakson Winn were the stars for the Colorado School of Mines men's and women's swimming & diving teams Friday as the Orediggers closed out day three of the TYR/CMU Invitational hosted by Colorado Mesa.
Â
Bream impressed in multiple ways during the women's 400-IM. She had a NCAA "B" cut of 4:30.12 while qualifying first in prelims. In the evening, the true freshman dropped nearly seven seconds off that time and won the event in a program-record 4:23.23. Prior to Bream's finals performance on Friday, the fastest unadjusted 400-IM in program history was swum by April Wood in 4:27.48 during the 2020 conference championships. With adjustment for altitude, Wood's program record had been 4:22.48. Bream's altitude-adjusted record now stands at 4:18.23. Bream rounded out her day by taking sixth in the 100-breast and adding a leg on Mines' second 400-medley relay which scored fifth-place points.
Â
Krone wrote his name in the program record book three different times, all during Friday's evening session. First, he toppled Mines' 100-fly record, previously held by Charles Burroughs, with a third-place time of 48.06. That pace also came in as a NCAA "B" cut. Then, Krone reset his own 200-free record from Wednesday night with second NCAA time of 1:39.22 on the way to another bronze medal. Finally, the Indianapolis native provided the third leg on the men's 400-medley relay which clocked in at 3:16.69 thanks to the additional performances of Winn,
Joe Hutchinson, and
Dan Berke. They bested the quartet of
Luca Burns,
Jack Engler, Burroughs, and Garrett Waite which produced a 3:17.88 (3:17.48 adjusted) at the 2024 conference championships.
Â
Winn's relay contributions weren't his only record of the day either. In fact, his relay leadoff would have broken his own Oredigger men's record in the 100-back, but the senior had lowered that mark to 47.85 (47.75 adjusted) during the morning prelims in the same event. Winn eventually took silver in the 100-back during finals before starting the men's record-breaking relay to end the night. His performances in prelims and finals both fell under the NCAA "B" standard and put him in strong position to qualify for the national meet.
Â
Bream, Krone, and Winn stood out on a day that featured numerous outstanding performances by the Orediggers.
Kaya Flaherty churned out a pair of NCAA times in the 100-fly after qualifying third during prelims before scoring fifth-place points for Mines while also dropping her time.
Lucas Hoke dropped nearly two seconds off his 400-IM pace during finals to notch a NCAA cut.
Ava LaBrose's 200-free started with a national time in prelims which got faster in finals as LaBrose raced to bronze in the event.
Jordan Tierney showed strong in the 100-breast, posting NCAA times in the morning and evening on the way to silver.
Mary Flikkema added to the list of Orediggers' with NCAA times by qualifying for finals and shaving half a second off her pace. Also notable was
Bruno Albertoni competing in his first-ever collegiate 3-meter, 11-dive sequence where he finished sixth with a score of 484.10.
Â
After three days of action, the team scores stand as follows. On the men's side, Colorado Mesa is first with 1,300 point and Mines is second with 727 points. The women's competition has CMU first with 862 points, NCAA Division I Northern Arizona second with 697 points, Mines third with 542 points.
Â
