KEARNEY, Neb. - Cade Whish's runner-up performance at 285 pounds led Colorado School of Mines at the Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday.
Whish was one of three placewinners for the Orediggers joined by
Marcus Caro's fourth-place finish at Intermediate 157 and
Deringer Hollenbeck placing sixth at Amateur 157.
Whish, competing in the Intermediate 285 bracket, went 2-1 on the day, beating Adams State's Jaylden Ignacio 7-2 before pinning Western Colorado's Tommy Tatham late in the first period. He suffered a competitive 5-2 loss in the final to Rochester Tech's Cito Tuttle, the #6-ranked heavyweight in the NJCAA.
Caro had a 4-2 day in his bracket, wrestling back from an early loss to make it to the third-place bout. Three of his four wins came with bonus points - including falls over Fort Hays State's Micah Castro and Collin Quandt - before he fell 8-3 in the third-place bout to UMary's Maverick Mueller.
Hollenbeck, in his official Mines debut, went 5-1 before hitting his bout limit, ultimately ending up sixth. He had an outstanding tournament with three falls and two technical falls to his credit.
Ryan Dugan had a 3-2 day in his debut at Intermediate 125 and
Coen Schmidt was also 3-2 in the Amateur 141 bracket, and
Xander Sweeney (Intermediate 125),
Hunter Samora (Intermediate 133), and
Timber Parlin (Intermediate 184) finished 2-2.
Kaleb Valdez-Lemos (Intermediate 165) and
Marco Romero (Amateur 125) were 1-2, while
Cole O'Brien (Intermediate 149),
Jaron Mahler (Intermediate 157),
Gunner Samora (Amateur 125), and
Yahir Chairez-Salazar (Amateur 149) suffered 0-2 tournaments.
Mines next heads to Kansas to take on Ouachita Baptist and Fort Hays State in a tri-meet on Dec. 6 in Hays.
