GOLDEN, Colo. – The 2025 season came to a close Sunday night for the #7 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team at the hands of #14 UCCS by way of a 3-1 result in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. A scoreless first half was followed by two goals in the span of four minutes late in the second half as the Orediggers (14-2-5) and Mountain Lions (14-2-6) played to a similar result from eight days prior in the RMAC semifinals, but this time the advancement going the other way in the shootout.
In the first half, Mines had two promising looks in the first 19 minutes off the foot of
Bella Campos, first in the 17th minute as a chip shot over UCCS keeper Nylah Mirshafiei was lofted a bit too high and banged off the crossbar back into play. Moments later, Campos got the angle on a Mountain Lion defender and looked to go across goal to the near post, only to instead have that shot carom off the post for a second near-miss and the final scoring chance in the opening 45 minutes.
Annelise Rojo and
Afton Rasco put the first two shots on frame of the night in the 46th and 52nd minutes as a team save and a grab by Mirshafiei kept the action scoreless. As time wound down, emotions ran high as the match became much more physical in the final 30 minutes with several hard challenges being whistled both ways. That increased physicality allowed UCCS an opportunity to score first in the 75th minutes as a pair of shots from Brooke Pavlich were first blocked, then saved by
Allie Lundgren before the final rebound was put home by Abby Stassi for the lead. The Orediggers wasted little time countering, as a 79th minute corner kick from
Kaitlyn Manalili was headed home on the back post by none other than
Natalie Rouse to draw level at 1-1 and send the match to extra time.
Over the two 10-minutes extra period, six shots went on the board with just one on frame as Emily Aguilar tried to get a ball past Lundgren in the 95th minute with no success. As 110 minutes came and went, the teams and all in attendance braced themselves for the impending shootout with the 10-round roller coaster from the RMAC semifinals still fresh in their minds. UCCS led off with a make from Tay Levi before both Campos and Stassi, the top scorers in the RMAC, both saw their shots saved. After a pair of makes in the third round made it 2-1, Elise Broberg converted in the fourth before Mines' shootout luck finally ran out with
Gaby Guerrero misfiring as the Mountain Lions advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament 3-1 by way of the shootout.
