Late Stand Keeps Mines Ahead of Rogers State

GOLDEN, Colo. – A late stand during Tuesday night's game helped the Colorado School of Mines women's basketball team earn a 79-73 victory against Rogers State inside Lockridge Arena.

Jenna Shandy and Emma Sixta were the top two scorers in the game. Shandy scored 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting with a 5-for-8 mark from long range. She also added two free throws, four steals, two assists, and one block. Sixta's game resume featured 24 points with four assists and one steal. Quincey Baum came to play with her 11-point, 12-rebound double-double in just 22 minutes of action. Other notable performances included Jade Leon's eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals while Sophia Baal added four steals as well.

Mines (2-5) outrebounded Rogers State (2-4) by a 47-32 margin and drained 10 three-pointers to get the win. That production offset a turnover deficit of 21-17. The Hillcats suffered from a 15-of-23 mark at the free-throw line. The Orediggers, despite committing more turnovers, had more steals than RSU. In the end, Mines converted 28 of 64 shot attempts for a 43.8 percentage. Rogers State went 26-for-62 to shoot 41.9 percent from the floor. The Hillcats other notable advantage was 31 points off turnovers compared to 21 points off turnovers for the home team. Bailey Layman finished as RSU's leading scorer thanks to 16 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Tuesday's contest started with an 11-0 run for Mines which eventually turned into a 16-2 lead for the Orediggers. A 19-9 home lead at the end of the first quarter was fueled by 13 points off the hand of Shandy. That advantage quickly dissipated when Rogers State started the second quarter on a 10-0 run. Baum's six points and five rebounds in the second frame helped Mines carry a 37-28 advantage into halftime.

The Hillcats stayed scrappy after the break and won the third quarter, 27-21. Shandy kept the Orediggers in the lead with 11 points on perfect shooting from the floor. Rogers State kept it close in the fourth quarter and even took its first lead of the game at 61-60 with 8:09 to play. Sixta's driving layup quickly reclaimed the Oredigger advantage which the home team would not surrender. Mines' lead never surpassed during the last eight minutes of action. That is, until Baum's final free throw in the final seconds made the final score of 79-73. To be fair, a pair of Sixta free throws were the true clincher with 12 seconds on the clock. In the final period, Baum grabbed three rebounds and Sixta poured in 12 points to lock-in the victory.
