WEEK NINE RECAP
Mines dropped their final two home matches of 2025 last weekend to CSU Pueblo and UCCS by scores of 3-2 and 3-1. Thursday against the ThunderWolves, Mines stormed back from a 2-0 deficit thanks to goals by Noah Roles and Charlie Newberry off long throws by Lucas Taitt. Unfortunately, heartbreak struck again as for the second time in two matches, the Orediggers ceded the go-ahead goal, this time in the final 13 seconds as CSUP eked out the win. Sunday against UCCS, Mines found themselves starting down a 3-0 deficit following a six-minute stretch from the 17th through the 23rd minutes as the Mountain Lions scored on three well-run plays. Newberry broke up the shutout in the second half as the Orediggers looked to rally, but were unable to do so in the final 20 minutes.

THE SKIPPER
With a record of 99-44-24 (.665) overall and 69-18-10 in RMAC action at the helm in Golden, skipper Greg Mulholland has established himself as one of the top head coaches not just in Division II, but the NCAA as a whole. His career winning percentage ranks near the top among active Division II coaches with a minimum of five years of experience, and places him in the top 40 nationally across all divisions of the NCAA. An assistant with the Orediggers from 2007-2016 who served as interim head coach in 2017 before having the interim tag dropped in 2018, Mulholland ranks among the top 10 active Division II coaches with a minimum of five years on the job in winning percentage and is 15th across the entirety of NCAA Soccer. Under his direction, Mines has claimed a combined 11 regular season and postseason championships, running off six consecutive regular season crowns from 2017-22 and four tournament titles from 2017-20. Mulholland is also a four-time RMAC Coach of the Year and has twice headed up the United Soccer Coaches Regional Staff of the Year.

THE CAPTAINS
Prior to opening night against Azusa Pacific, the Orediggers announced their 2025 captains with two newcomers to the role and one returner. Caden Allaire returns for his second run wearing the armband as he's joined by Luka Hanna and Carter Jansen.

Allaire, a transfer from Casper College, heads into his senior season as the most experienced goalkeeper on the Mines roster. Over his first two seasons, he started 24 of 26 games he appeared in and registered 89 saves against 41 goals allowed in 2,135:58 between the pipes. For his career, he's netted six wins, four shutouts and has a .685 save rate to go with a 1.73 GAA.

Hanna, now in his third season with Mines after playing 2022 at Tulsa, appeared in 30 matches with 11 starts in his first two seasons, scoring a goal and taking seven shots in 1,272 minutes of action and enters this fall as a key figure in the Mines midfield.

Jansen, a third-year player who has been a fixture on the Mines backline since his arrival in Golden in 2023, appeared in 28 matches with 22 starts heading into his junior season and logged 1,828 minutes as an outside and center back.

IN THE POLLS
For the second season running, Mines was tabbed to finish fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's soccer preseason coaches poll.

UCCS was voted the preseason favorite this fall with five of 11 first place votes followed by Fort Lewis in second with three and defending champion CSU Pueblo in third with two. Regis was just ahead of Mines in fourth while MSU Denver was picked to finish sixth to round out the projected playoff field.

Nationally the top five remained the same with little movement as Stanislaus State remained #1 followed by Charleston and Palm Beach Atlantic. Fort Hays State and Anderson exchanged fourth and fifth to round out the top five. Around the RMAC, CSU Pueblo dropped from the rankings but still earned votes along with MSU Denver while UCCS dropped from consideration entirely.

JOINING THE STAFF
A new face will be roaming the Mines bench in 2025 as Ben Fredrickson joined the program in May as the program's top assistant coach. Prior to joining the Orediggers, Fredrickson served as Real Colorado's Assistant Academy Director and head coach of the organization's U16 MLS Next program. A well-traveled coach with experience at a variety of levels, the New Zealander is no stranger to the RMAC as he played collegiately at Regis from 2010-13. He also played in the United Soccer League's second division as well as New Zealand First Division club Team Wellington. Learn more about Coach Fredrickson here.

Additionally, a former Oredigger All-American returns to the bench this season as Lucas King makes his coaching debut at the collegiate level. A six-year member of the Mines program thanks to the 2020 pandemic, King was a three-time All-RMAC and All-Region selection from the United Soccer Coaches and D2 CCA as well. He started 84 times in 91 matches in his five seasons of action and logged 62 points on 13 goals and 36 assists, the second-most in program history. 12 of King's assists came in the fall 2021 season, as that mark is the third-best in a season all-time.

CHECKING THE STANDINGS
Heading into the final day of the season, UCCS leads the standings and has clinched the top seed and at least a share of the regular season title at 7-1-1 and 22 points. MSU Denver is locked in with 19 points and a mark of 6-2-1 in second. Colorado Mesa, Westminster and Regis are all 5-2-2 in third with 17 points while CSU Pueblo currently holds the sixth and final spot at 4-2-3 and 15 points. Fort Lewis is the first team out at 4-3-2 and 14 points and the last team in contention. Colorado Christian is eighth with eight points at 2-5-2 followed by South Dakota Mines at 2-7-1 and seven points. Mines is 10th with six points at 2-7-0 with Adams State bringing up the rear at 0-9-0 with zero points.

LEAGUE LEADERS
Entering the final day of the regular season, a handful of Orediggers can find their names atop the RMAC statistical leaderboards. Kiernan DiBella leads the league in saves this fall with 69 and is third in save percentage at .711. Lucas Taitt meanwhile is tied for second with eight assists in his debut season.

DUAL-THREAT DEFENDERS
It's always a good thing when a team can get production from up and down their roster of the course of a season. For Mines in 2025, they've gotten a perhaps unexpected offensive boost from a trio of players who have comprised the back line of the defense for most of the season. Following this weekend's action, more than one-third of the goals scored by the Orediggers this fall have come from the trio of Charlie Newberry, Noah Roles and Brady Scheinfeld. The group has made a living scoring on set pieces, another area of success for Mines this fall, and with all three poised to return in 2026, Mines' back line will have plenty of experience in all facets of the game based on their performance this year.

GO LONG
Lucas Taitt has been one of the top players on the offensive side of the ball for Mines this fall in large part due to his affinity for long throw ins in the attacking third of the field. The primary man no matter which side of the field the ball is on, Taitt always gives his mates a chance to score with his well-placed long throws. In fact, seven of Taitt's eight assists this season have come by way of long throws and after doing so three times over the weekend, now finds himself tied for second in the RMAC in assists. In fact, Taitt's lone live-ball assist this fall came when he played a long ball to J McGill against Colorado Mesa three weeks ago. Hopefully his performance this fall warrants the second-year freshman a look at All-RMAC honors as the season winds down.

HERE'S CHARLIE!
One of the undisputed leaders of the Orediggers, Charlie Newberry brings high-intensity approach to each match. The second-year Dayton transfer continues to emerge as a rising star in the program as he took over the team lead in scoring with a goal in each match against CSU Pueblo and UCCS this fall. Scoring all four of his goals in set piece situations, Newberry has proven himself invaluable in that facet of the game while helping bring an attitude of grit and determination to the defense at center back.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT
With 23 freshmen or sophomores on their current 35-man active roster, there were sure to be some growing pains for the Orediggers this season, but looking to 2026 and beyond there's plenty of reason to be optimistic. Starting with scoring, of the 23 goals by Mines this fall 19 have been scored by players with freshman or sophomore somewhere in their roster designation. Of those goals, 16 have come from the group of Charlie Newberry, Leo Santana, J McGill, Kian Mueller, Noah Roles and Brady Scheinfeld as each of those six has scored at least twice this fall. In goal, Kiernan DiBella has been one of the top statistical goalies in the RMAC this season as a freshman and heading into next fall, another full goalie room will see Zach MacDonald enter the fray and compete for reps after a redshirt season this fall.

Also when looking at the breakdown of starters this fall, nine players who have started at least half of the matches for Mines this fall are either freshmen or sophomores. While the results on the scoresheet haven't necessarily been favorable, those young players on the roster for the Orediggers have been able to gain invaluable experience and now know what it takes to compete at a high level in one of the top leagues in Division II soccer.

CHECKING THE STATS
Following his two-goal weekend, Charlie Newberry is the new clubhouse leader with four goals on the fall and now is tied for the team lead in points as he also has two assists. The freshman duo of J McGill and Leo Santana have three goals each while the quartet of Kian Mueller, Abou Bakar Berthe, Noah Roles and Brady Scheinfeld have each scored twice. Lucas Taitt, Avi Levin, Marc Levin and Hudson Waddell all have scored once this fall to round out those on the active roster with a goal in 2025.

When it comes to assists, few in the RMAC have been better than Taitt as the second year freshman leads the Orediggers with eight dimes and is tied for second in the league. Newberry, Santana, Mueller, Avi Levin and Tommy Jernigan all have two assists, while Bakar Berthe, Roles, Scheinfeld, Marc Levin, Alex Gonzalez, Luke Hanna and Jaden Igarta all have one.

Between the pipes, Kiernan DiBella has led the way with 15 starts in 16 outings for 1,395:22 and faced 229 shots. The freshman leads the RMAC with 69 saves and has a .711 save rate and a 1.81 GAA with one shutout. Caden Allaire has seen action twice and in 44:38, has made two saves against four goals allowed.

On the year, Mines is -9 in scoring at 32-23 and averages 1.44 goals on 9.2 shots per match while opponents have netted 2.00 goals on 15.3 shots. The Orediggers have 25 assists on their 23 goals and have combined for 74 saves defensively. They are 0-2 on PKs and have attempted 67 corner kicks. Mines has been whistled for 164 fouls, issued 34 yellow cards and one ejection.

SCOUTING REGIS
Regis is looking to cement their place in the postseason heading into Wednesday's match as they currently sit in a three-way tie for third in the standings with Colorado Mesa and Westminster two points ahead of CSU Pueblo and three ahead of Fort Lewis. The Rangers enter the regular season finale winners of their last three matches, going on the road on October 26 and beating Westminster 1-0 before posting 8-1 and 3-1 wins at home last weekend against Adams State and Fort Lewis.

14 different players have scored this fall for the Rangers led by Jason Robles with five goals. Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit and Elias Taubo have four apiece while a further six players have each scored twice. An additional five players have a single goal to their tallies this season.

When it comes to assists, Carlson-Du Toit leads the way with four while Betancourt-Tovar and Robles have three and two respectively. 11 more Rangers have a single assist to their names as well.

In goal, Zach Jennings has turned in a strong freshman season and started all 16 matches for 1,395:00. In that time against 142 shots, he has made 44 saves and allowed 21 goals for a .677 save percentage and a 1.35 GAA. He has a 7-5-4 record with two shutouts. Hojin Lee has made one appearance in relief for 45 minutes against Adams State, making a save and allowing a goal against the only two shots he faced.

On the year, Regis is +9 in scoring at 31-22 and averages 1.94 goals on 11.6 shots per match while opponents have averaged 1.38 goals and 9.0 shots per contest. They have 20 assists on their 31 goals and have combined for 50 saves defensively. They have gone 4-4 from the spot this fall and taken 63 corner kicks. RU has been whistled for 185 fouls and assessed 34 cautions with two ejections.

SERIES HISTORY
Mines is 46-36-11 all-time against Regis and 23-18-7 as the road team. The last time the teams met came on October 17 of last season and saw Mines storm back from a 3-0 deficit in the final 40 minutes to earn a draw on the road. Over the last 10 meetings dating back to 2017, the Orediggers are 5-2-3 and 3-1-1 playing in Denver.
