GOLDEN, Colo. -
Brandon Cody and
Kaleb Valdez-Lemos captured their weight-class titles to lead Colorado School of Mines at their home Rookie Open on Sunday at Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Cody won the 157-pound bracket and Valdez-Lemos took the 165-pound competition among six placewinners overall for the Orediggers, who had 13 attached competitors in the field with many - including Cody - making their official collegiate debuts.
Cody, a redshirt freshman, cruised to a 5-0 career start with four bonus-point wins, earning a technical fall, decision, and two majors before pinning Western Wyoming's Ryker Gibson in 3:15 in the final. Valdez-Lemos also had a 5-0 day that included wins by fall in his first two bouts before grinding out three decisions, winning his semifinal 6-5 over Adams State's Malachi Rider and the final 9-6 against Air Force's Jake Wood.

Hunter Samora finished sixth at 133 going 3-2, earning a pair of major decisions on the day, while another debuting 133-pounder
Nico Farinola finished eighth going 3-2 with all three victories coming with bonus points, including one fall.
Xander Sweeney placed eighth at 125 with a 3-2 day, and
Ben Fanelli was eighth at 149 also going 3-2 with a pin.
Marcus Caro went 2-2 at 157,
Marco Romero (125) was 1-2, and
Gunner Samora (125),
Coen Schmidt (141),
Yahir Chairez-Salazar (149),
Cole O'Brien (149), and
Austin Holman (157) had 0-2 tournaments.
The Orediggers stay at home to start RMAC dual action next Friday, hosting New Mexico Highlands at 6 p.m. in Volk Gym.
