GOLDEN, Colo. –
Jenna Siebert made history for the Colorado School of Mines Women's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon as she scored 40 points in the Orediggers' 87-57 win against Chadron State at Lockridge Arena.
Siebert's outburst broke the program's single-game scoring record and made her the first Oredigger woman to ever score 40 points in a game. She accomplished history without attempting a free throw, going 6-of-11 from three-point range and 17-for-29 from the floor overall. Siebert also added four rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal in the winning effort.
Audrey Beaty and
Peyton Freiermuth also scored in double digits, touting 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
Isa Hensley racked up three steals and
Josephine Howery dished out three steals. Six rebounds apiece for Howery and Freiermuth were tops in the game. The leading scorer for the visitors was Liberty Line who tallied 12.
Mines (10-14, 8-8 RMAC) dominated the critical facets of the game, shooting over 45 percent from the floor and over 40 percent from three-point range. The Orediggers' won the rebound battle, 42-28, and the turnover battle, 20-12. Those 20 turnovers by Chadron State (5-17, 4-12 RMAC) came on 12 steals by Mines. The Eagles entered the week ranked #9 in the nation in free-throw percentage, but only shot 59 percent at the charity stripe on Saturday. Eight made three-pointers were an advantage for CSC, as were 15 assists and 42 points off the bench. With the win, the Orediggers move into a tie for #8 in the RMAC standings. Chadron State was mathematically eliminated from the postseason with four games to play and tiebreakers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines started the game on a 7-0 run and did not look back. The Eagles scrapped early, but the Orediggers produced a 10-0 surge to close the first quarter. After 10 minutes of game action, the home team touted a 21-8 lead. Chadron State managed 15 points in the second quarter, but Mines still outscored its guests with 21 points. By halftime, Siebert had scored 16 points and the Orediggers owned a 42-23 advantage. The break did little to slow Mines down. A 23-5, Oredigger run bridged from the second frame in to the third as Siebert truly started to "feel it." The Valor Christian graduate drained two three-pointers in the first two minutes of the third quarter. That fueled an 18-point period for Siebert and set her up for history.
The game entered the fourth quarter with Mines leading, 71-43 and Siebert sitting on 34 points. It took her eight seconds to find a driving layup. Forty seconds later, she worked another layup to tie the program's single-game scoring record at 38. History came at the 8:17 mark and it was a jumper from the foul line. A full minute later, Siebert exited the game to a round of applause. The Orediggers had no trouble closing out the victory.
