Errors Doom Orediggers On Day One In Florida

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Back on the road for the second week in a row to open the 2025 season, the Colorado School of Mines softball team was on the campus of Barry University Friday to take on preseason #19 Wingate and the hosts for their first two days of their Florida excursion, Barry. Defensive miscues plagued the Orediggers (0-6) in both matchups against the Bulldogs (2-1) and Bucs (3-2), leading to a pair of setbacks by scores of 9-1 in six innings in the opener and 8-1 in the nightcap.

Both sides had scoring chances go by the wayside in the first inning. For Mines, Kellan Ton led off the game with a walk and stole second before being joined on base by Hannah Roberts with a walk of her own, but Hali Scott got out of trouble thanks to three strikeouts in the inning. The home first saw Wingate get the first two batters on and after a strikeout and a foul out to the catcher, Ellen Shull (0-2) looked to get out of her own jam, but a single through the left side of the infield loaded the bases for the preseason #19 team in Division II. Much to the delight of Mines fans in attendance, Shull left the bases loaded as a grounder to third saw Lindy French take the short way for the final out of the frame.

The Orediggers went down in order in the second before the Bulldogs got on the board first with runners at the corners. Lexie Semeyn tried to backdoor Carrie Ellen Bryan at third, but the resulting throw ended up in left field allowing Bryan to score. Following a bunt single, a groundball of the bat of Kaylee Hobgood was fielded cleanly at short by E Self, but the throw was low and up the line toward right field as two more runs scored on the error to make it 3-0.

Mia Lopez led off the top of the third with a walk and after a sac bunt by Kellan Ton, was joined on base by Kendall Aragon with a walk of her own. Unfortunately, the scoring change failed to materialize as a strikeout and a flyout to shallow right ended the inning. Taylor Wayne came on in relief in the home third and hung a zero after working around a leadoff walk. Unfortunately, the fourth inning saw Wingate plate four more runs to take a 7-0 lead thanks to a one-out RBI single, wild pitch and a two-out two-run double.

Allison Westbrook took over in the fifth inning and stranded a runner following a two-out single to get some momentum back in the Mines dugout. In the sixth, Kailey Morales was able to carry that momentum with a two-out walk before being lifted for pinch runner Sam Whisenand at first. Semeyn was the next batter and lined a double up the left field line and into the corner which allowed Whisenand to score all the way from first without issue to get on the board and make it 7-1.

However, that run just prolonged what turned out to be the inevitable as WU loaded the bases with the first three batters of the inning. Though an out was recorded in a run down between third and home, an RBI single followed by a pinch hit ground out brought across the final two runs to end the action early by a tally of 9-1 in six innings.

The second action of the day saw Kailey Morales bomb a double down the left field line with two outs in the top of the first before Cassidy Chvatal coaxed a walk to join her, but again the scoring chance went by the wayside as a strikeout ended the inning. Kat Miller (0-2) started strong with a scoreless first, working around a two-out single by Caroline Figueroa to retire the side with three infield groundouts and following that up with a 1-2-3 second.

The Orediggers threatened again their half of the third as Kellan Ton singled and Mia Lopez was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning, but Barry's Alexis Martin managed to dance out of danger with a pair of flyouts. The Bucs capitalized on the momentum by scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the inning. Jadyn Rogers reached on a throwing error on a bunt to third and ended up at second on the play before stealing third. A Mya Tucker single put runners on the corners before Sarah Langlie plated both runners with a single to right field. Another error later in the inning saw a third run cross before Miller managed to get out of the inning.

The Bucs threatened to add another run the in fourth as a one-out error and a two-out single by runners at the corners, but Morales, Roberts and Chvatal managed to get the third out of the inning on a steal-and-stop play attempt by Barry, getting the out at first before the runner at third crossed home. Emily Rogers opened the fifth with an infield single and advanced to second on sacrifice by Kendall Aragon to put a runner in scoring position for the top of the order. Ton singled back to the circle as the lineup turned over and ended up at second on an error, allowing Rogers to wheel around and score to get Mines on the board. Lopez worked a walk and after a Morales groundout moved both runner 60 feet, the Orediggers had a chance to tie it but a strikeout ended the inning.

Barry responded with a run in their half behind a single and double to open things up, but a double play on a infield popup was handled by Miller who wheeled and fired to Lauren Romero for the out at third. After a double put another runner in scoring position, the junior induced a groundout to second to end the threat. Four more runs crossed in the home sixth for the Bucs as again an error loomed large as the deficit moved to 8-1. That tally ended up being the final margin as Mines went down in order in the seventh to close the day one action.
