CHAMPS! #16 Mines Downs #25 Mesa For Share of RMAC Crown

2/7/2025 8:30:00 PM

GOLDEN, Colo. - #16 Colorado School of Mines captured at least a share of the 2025 RMAC men's wrestling championship, taking down previously-unbeaten #25 Colorado Mesa 23-15 before a standing-room-only crowd at Volk Gym.

With the share of the title going to the winner, the Orediggers (12-2, 6-0 RMAC) raced ahead of the Mavericks (8-1, 5-1 RMAC) with wins over three of CMU's five ranked individuals in the dual, including wins by Christian Lopez, Trebor Moreno, and Ethan Kremer

The title is Mines' third, all coming since 2019 under head coach Austin DeVoe. The Orediggers can finish an unbeaten RMAC season and earn the title outright with a win over Simon Fraser on Wednesday.

Lopez set the tone at 125 pounds winning a match-up of top-10 wrestlers as the #9-ranked Oredigger beat #7 Dayson Torgerson 9-5, scoring all of his points on takedowns in the first five minutes. The momentum carried over to 133 where Moreno stunned #14 Oran Huff in a 14-3 major decision, getting takedowns in each period and four-point turns in the second and third. #4 Grayston DiBlasi then rode out the final two periods at 141 to dominate Denim Torgerson 5-0 and put Mines ahead 10-0.

Mesa pulled back two wins at 149 and 157 pounds, first when Keyton Young beat Ben Fanelli 7-3 at 149, and then with Owen Cline's upset of #11 Marcus Caro in an 18-3 technical fall at 157 to cut Mines' lead to 10-8.

Jakob Smith blew the dual wide open, however, thanks to his pin at 165, leading Wil Moneypenny 9-3 after a third-period reversal and then rolling him into a fall with 42 seconds remaining. #14 Wyatt Reisz then took care of Gus Dalton, 8-3, at 174, and Ethan Kremer scored Mines' third and final upset of the night as he beat #15 Jason Bynarowicz 13-4 at 184. Kremer - wrestling only his second bout at a new weight class - attacked from the start with a lightning-quick takedown to nearfall-4, and he did not allow a takedown to seal the dual win up 23-8.

CMU earned wins at 197 as Gabe Carranza beat Jeffery Morosini 11-1, and 285 as #13 Tyler Doyle topped Cade Whish 8-2.
