GUNNISON, Colo. - Wyatt Reisz punched his ticket to the national championship meet with his third-place finish at 174 pounds at the NCAA Super Region VI Championships at Western Colorado.
Reisz finished third to earn his way to the NCAA Division II Championship meet in Indianapolis, which is set to start March 14. The #11-ranked sophomore went 4-1 on the day and beat #2 Cole Hernandez of Western Colorado in the third-place bout to clinch his nationals spot.
Mines had five placewinners on the day as
Grayston DiBlasi and
Jakob Smith were fourth,
Christian Lopez was fifth, and
Ryan Cody finished sixth. Mines was sixth in the team standings with 68.5 points as Nebraska-Kearney won the regional title with 159.
Reisz made a run into the 174 semifinals, pinning his first opponent Diego Robles of Cal Poly Humboldt before winning a decision over CSU Pueblo's Solomon Arnds-Volcin. He was narrowly beaten in the semis by Gus Dalton of Mesa, but wrestled back with a 15-3 major over Adams State's Dallas Porter before defeating Hernandez for the second time this season, 8-2, to clinch third.
At 125, Lopez went 3-2 on the day, suffering a quarterfinal tiebreaker loss 8-4 but rallying with a pin and tech fall to make the consolation semis. He ran into #2 Zach Ourada there and battled in an 11-6 loss, but ended with his hand raised for fifth to conclude his outstanding career with a 63-39 record.
At 141, #9 DiBlasi ended in fourth place following a 2-2 tournament. DiBlasi advanced to the semis with a pin over CSU Pueblo's Hayden Tuma, but fell 4-0 to Adams State's #8 Angel Flores; he wrestled back to beat Denim Torgerson of Colorado Mesa 1-0, but suffered an 11-9 heartbreaker against #4 Johnny Lopez of San Francisco State in the placing round. DiBlasi ends his standout career third all-time at Mines with 95 wins, and is fifth with 27 falls; his .772 career win percentage ranks fourth in program history.
Smith advanced to the 165-pound third-place bout but ended up fourth after a 3-2 day. All three of Smith's wins came by fall, but he ran up against #4 Trenton Munoz of Nebraska-Kearney in the placing round in a tough 4-2 loss. Cody was sixth at 197 pounds going 2-3, winning by fall and technical fall before #5 Jackson Kinsella of UNK stopped his progress in the semis; he then lost two close, high-scoring decisions in the consolation rounds.
Trebor Moreno (133),
Marcus Caro (157),
Ethan Kremer (184), and
Cade Whish (285) were 1-2 in their tournaments, while
Ben Fanelli was 0-2 at 149.
