THE ROAD TO INDIANAPOLIS
Sophomore
Wyatt Reisz has qualified for his first national championship meet thanks to his third-place finish at 174 pounds at the NCAA Super Region VI Championships on March 1 in Gunnison. Reisz went 4-1 in that tournament and beat #2 Cole Hernandez of Western Colorado in the do-or-die third-place bout to clinch his nationals spot; his wins included a pin and major decision plus two decisions. This season, Reisz is 23-4, which included a 10-0 dual record and a 21-4 record vs. D-II competition. He has been excellent against nationally-ranked foes as well, going 3-1. Through two seasons, the Logan, Iowa native has a career record of 42-12.Â
BREAKING DOWN THE BRACKET
Reisz faces a tough opening assignment, drawn against second-seeded and defending national champion Joshua Kenny (17-5) of Grand Valley State. The winners and losers of that match will face the same from the first-round bout between McKendree's Matt Ortiz and the winner of the prelim between Drake Howard (Minnesota State) and Maxwell Kiel (Belmont Abbey). Reisz is 4-2 this season vs. NCAA qualifiers, but has not faced anyone on his side of the bracket; he owns three wins over Colorado Mesa's Gus Dalton, plus another over King's Clint Morrisette, while losing once to Dalton and to Gannon's Patrick Jackson, all of whom are in the upper half of the 174-pound bracket. All six of those matches, win or lose, came by decision.
NOTING MINES AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Mines is making its 55th NCAA championship appearance since 1958 … Mines' best team finish at the NCAA Division II meet was seventh in 1996 ... The Orediggers have seven individual national champions, the last coming in 1998 when John Simpson won at 184 ...
Cody Thompson made a run to the 149-pound national final in 2024, one of two national finalists under
Austin DeVoe along with heavyweight Weston Hunt in 2021 … The program has had 56 all-Americans since 1960 … Reisz is the 48th different Oredigger to make the nationals field in the qualification era dating back to 1975.Â
THE CHAMPS ARE HERE
The Orediggers won the outright RMAC championship Feb. 12 with their 29-15 win over Simon Fraser, capping off a perfect 7-0 RMAC dual schedule. It marks the third title for the Orediggers, all coming since 2019 under RMAC Coach of the Year
Austin DeVoe. Mines was well-rewarded for their title win in the RMAC's postseason honors, as
Jakob Smith earned First-Team All-RMAC honors at 165 pounds while four Orediggers took Second-Team All-RMAC accolades:
Christian Lopez (125 lbs.),
Grayston DiBlasi (141 lbs.),
Wyatt Reisz (174 lbs.), and

Austin DeVoe is in his 12th season in charge of the Mines Wrestling program, having rebuilt the Orediggers into a national contender with three RMAC titles, eight all-Americans, and eight Academic All-Americans in his tenure. With 89 dual wins under his belt, Mines has had seven consecutive winning dual seasons including the only three double-digit win seasons in program history, including tying the program wins record in 2022-23 with an 11-2 record and surpassing it already in 2024-25. On the national stage, Mines has had team success as well including an 11th-place finish in 2022 which was the program's best finish since the 1990s.Â
