INDIANAPOLIS – Quick splits and fast races were the order of the day for a quartet of Orediggers representing the nationally-ranked Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Swimming teams on their second day of the 2025 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships.
Â
Isabella Bono,
Ronan Lauinger,
Jennifer Pierson, and
Vladislav Kazakin all raced in prelims for Mines on Thursday morning. Bono and Lauinger were in the women's and men's 400-IM. Pierson and Kazakin made waves in the 200-free. While none of the four advanced to the evening finals, there were plenty of highlights all the way around. As a team, Mines' men still tout 12 points thanks to Kazakin's all-America swim on Wednesday morning. That has the Orediggers sitting #20 with Thursday swimming and diving finals yet to come. Mines' women are still chasing their first team points with plenty of promise across the last two days an four sessions of racing. Â

The first race of the day for the Orediggers featured Bono in the women's 400-IM. She closed out a with a 4:29.72 to finish #24 in the nation and hold her seeding going into the week. It marked the second-fastest 400-IM of her career without adjustment for altitude. With other altitude-adjusted races included, the time ranked fourth on her personal list. The most impressive part of Bono's morning was her final leg, the 100-free, in which she turned in a 56.86 split. Nobody in the field had a faster final split and the next-closest was a 58.7. In the same event on the men's side, Lauinger busted out a 3:56.63 and claimed #20 in the nation. For his career, the raw time ranked fourth. The three other times that were faster came Lauinger's freshman year at the national meet and last season at the national meet in an all-American finish.

Mines closed the morning and the day cheering on Pierson and Kazakin in the men's and women's 200-free. Pierson went first and produced a 1:52.42 to finish #38 in the nation. It marked the second-fastest 200-free of her career without adjustment for altitude, and ranked sixth all-time for the true freshman when including altitude-adjusted races. Kazakin, a fellow true freshman, flew to a 1:39.66 and #39 in the nation. The only 200-free times faster on Kazakin's resume include altitude conversions, making his race on Thursday the fastest 200-free of his young collegiate career. His previous raw bests were 1:40.86 at the TYR/CMU Invitational in November, and 1:39.91 at the 2025 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships last month.
