MINES SPLITS SQUAD, HEADS SOUTH OF THE BORDER
The fall golf season is in full swing and Colorado School of Mines is set for two tournaments this week, splitting their squad to compete in the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya in Mexico, and the Les Fowler Individual closer to home in Broomfield, Colo. Live leaderboards for both tournaments are available at the links above.

THE TOURNAMENTS
The Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya is an exciting chance to compete internationally for the Orediggers as they head to the Yucatan to play a world-class course. Taking on a familiar field that includes regional competition like CSU Pueblo, Colorado Mesa, Colorado Christian, West Texas A&M, and Cal State San Bernardino, the Orediggers will play an 18-18-18 format over three days starting Sunday. Mines' lineup includes Liam Allan, Colt Tenpenny, Lucas Schulte, Giacomo Gaggero, and Lukas Taggart. First-round tee times on Sunday will start for the Orediggers at 11:10 EST; the course is one hour ahead of Mountain time.

At the Les Fowler Individual at Broadlands GC, a three-man squad of Max Lange, Zach Shallat, and Eric Casademont Vinyoles will take on D-I competition in a 34-man field that includes players from P4 squads Oklahoma and Arizona State along with the host Colorado. No team scoring will be kept in the tournament, which will be played over 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start each day.

THE FORECASTS
The forecast for the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya is exactly what you'd expect for the Yucatan, with a high of 90 in humid conditions and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday. Monday and Tuesday will be in the upper 70s to low 80s in Broomfield with mostly sunny skies and a chance of an afternoon rain shower on Monday.

THE COURSES
PGA Riviera Maya is a Robert Trent Jones II design opened in 2010, playing 6,980 for this tournament at par 72. It hosted the PGA Tour's Tulum Championship this past May and is a frequent stop for pro circuits like the PGA Tour Americas. The course is set in a former limestone quarry surrounded by dense jungle with naturally-occuring cenotes and rock formations.

Broadlands is set up for 7,289 yards at par 72 for the Les Fowler Individual, opened in 1999 and designed by Rick Phelps. The course has water in play on 11 holes and offers sweeping views of the Front Range to the west.

LAST TIME OUT
Top-ten finishes by Liam Allan and Colt Tenpenny led Mines to seventh place at the San Juan Intercollegiate earlier this week. Allan tied for fifth riding a second-round 64, while Tenpenny's consisent play put him tied for ninth. Giacomo Gaggero and Lucas Schulte finished tied for 24th, Max Lange was 41st, and Lukas Taggart 44th. Among Mines' individuals, Eric Casademont Vinyoles was T24, Zach Shallat was 39th, and Carter Lolli T46.

ALLAN GOES LOW
Liam Allan's second round at the San Juan Invitational saw him card a 64 (-7) on the par-71 course, Mines' lowest score in nearly a decade. The freshman's round was the Orediggers' lowest since George Markham shot 63 (also -7 on a par 70 course) at the 2016 Maverick Invitational; Nick Berry also carded 64 at the 2015 RMAC Championships with a program-record -8 result.

IN THE POLLS
Mines was picked in a tie for second in the RMAC preseason coaches' poll, tied with CSU Pueblo just behind Colorado Mesa while receiving a pair of first-place votes. Mines is also receiving votes in last week's first in-season GCAA Bushnell/Golfweek Top 25.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Orediggers will host the Bob Writz Invitational Oct. 6-7 at Bear Creek in Lakewood, then wrap up the fall Oct. 13-14 at the Otter Invitational in Seaside, Calif.
