GOLDEN, Colo. – The #18-ranked Colorado School of Mines men's swimming & diving team went up against #4 Colorado Mesa Friday in the Orediggers' first home meet of the 2026-27 season.
Â
Two boards of diving and 13 swimming events finished with a final score of 168-73 in favor of the visiting Mavericks. Despite the loss, Mines still had plenty of positive performances with several stellar collegiate debuts and more than 10 top-three finishes.
Â
The day started with some early-afternoon diving where
Gavin Richmond wowed in his first collegiate competition. He swept silver on both boards after scoring 322.35 in the 3-meter event and 304.58 in the 1-meter event. Richmond's six-dive score on the high board was fractions away from breaking Mines' record in the event which was set in 1980. Teammate and Oredigger diving pioneer
Bruno Albertoni showed strong as well, scoring 288.53 in the 3-meter and 287.10 in the 1-meter. That excitement led to a two-hour break which allowed the swimmers to warmup.

At the first gun, Mines raced to bronze in the 200-medley relay in 1:34.07 and the meet was on.
Gherman Prudnikau grabbed a bronze medal in the 1000-free after swimming 9:46.12. True freshman
William McCaffery earned silver in the 200-free thanks to a 1:40.92 pace. In the 50-free, it was
Jack Fulham and
Dan Berke going 2-3 in 21.44 and 21.66, respectively.
Sebastian Guio claimed another silver for the Orediggers in the 400-IM with his 4:09.18 mark. The 100-free and 200-back were swept by CMU. However, the 500-free saw Mines bounce back with McCaffery,
Vladislav Kazakin, Prudnikau,
Lucas Hoke, and
Nathan Moss filling things up at 3-4-5-6-7. Fulham did his part with a 50.44 silver medal in the 100-fly. True freshman
Zach Marshall earned his own second-place finish in the 200-breast after stopping the clock at 2:06.8. The Mavericks exhibitioned their 400-freestyle relay teams. Even so, Mines still posted the second-fastest time in a field of five teams at 3:05.58.
Â
In the end, Colorado Mesa's impressive win was fueled by the fastest time in each event. The Mavericks also broke six facility records. All of this after an impressive weekend against NCAA Division I Utah and BYU.
Â
Mines' next action comes Saturday morning as the men and women make a quick turnaround to swim in Pueblo, Colo. The men will go head-to-head with Adams State in a neutral dual while the Oredigger women make it a tri-meet against ASU and CSU Pueblo.
