Oredigger Offense Surges for Saturday Split with Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team's offense surged late Saturday to earn a 20-3 win after falling, 12-5, during its doubleheader at Regis.

Tyler Hummel's five hits led the Orediggers across two games as he batted .556 with two runs and five RBI thanks to two doubles and one home run. Joe Reitz and Jackson Babcock both hit .667 while combining for five runs and five RBI with two doubles and one triple. Evan Bilter scored six times after being hit four times while drawing two walks. Ben Leiphart matched Hummel with one home run and five RBI. Tyler Easter recorded four RBI, Babcock and Dungan scored four runs each, and Brody Duvall, Babcock, and Tyler Easter tallied a total of 16 hits.

Luke Parker (2-2) and Jackson Kay (3-1) were the starters on the mound. Parker took the loss while Kay earned a win. Parker's line included seven runs on five hits across 2.0 innings. Kay churned out 6.0 innings of two-run, six-hit baseball. Dillon Alcouffe closed out the victory with a 0.00 ERA. Grady Booth, Mateo Aldecocea, Joseph Steidel, and Nicholas Spidel came out of the bullpen during the loss. Booth, Aldecocea, and Spidel also posted 0.00 earned-run averages.

Overall, the Orediggers (14-23, 11-12 RMAC) batted .397 and kept Regis (14-22-1, 5-13-1 RMAC) under .300 at the plate. Mines pumped out eight doubles, one triple, and two home runs for a .651 slugging percentage. Regis registered four doubles and one home run to post a .426 slugging percentage. Four of the Orediggers' five errors on the day came in the first game. Regis committed three fielding errors total. Mines' staff ERA was 6.92 while RU had a combined ERA of 16.07. The visiting pitchers totaled nine strikeouts and eight walks. Home arms accumulated eight strikeouts and 12 walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines came out of the gate and put up two runs in the first frame. However, Regis posted five runs in the opening inning and two more in the second inning for a 7-2 lead after two innings of action. Easter's double in the third cut the Oredigger deficit to 7-3. The early dagger for Mines was four unearned funs in the bottom of the third. Even so, the visitors battled by soring on run in the fourth and another in the fifth. Regis' sacrifice bunt in the sixth was just insurance as the RU bullpen shut down any threat from the Orediggers.

Game two of the day and the third of the series was a different story. Mines scored early and often. Leiphart's three-run home run in the first inning started the action after an awkward situation where Babcock earned a walk, but didn't earn a walk, and then officially earned a walk. Either way, Leiphart's smash sparked an eight-run second inning for the Orediggers. They added three more in the third inning thanks to Babock's two-run triple. Hummel's leadoff home run in the fourth inning made the score 12-0. Then, Hummel drove in Evan Bilter in the fifth inning on the way to a 14-0 lead. Regis' main scoring of the game was a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth frame. Mines added one run of insurance in the fifth inning and five more in the seventh inning before a lightning delay held up a 20-3 victory by 30 minutes.
