GOLDEN, Colo. –
Brody Duvall delivered the game-winning hit and
Alex Piscotty spun a save Thursday night as the Colorado School of Mines baseball team rallied to a 14-12 win over CSU Pueblo at Jim Darden Field.
Duvall's game-winning hit was a two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning. It capped a 4-for-6 night for the centerfielder who also scored three runs and totaled three RBI.
Tyler Pina and
Tyler Hummel each turned in three-hit performances with Pina scoring twice and Hummel notching an RBI.
Alex Dunagan,
Evan Bilter,
Jackson Babcock, and
Justin Holcomb had multi-hit games as well. Dunagan and
Tyler Easter both recorded a double. Holcomb and Bilter combined for four RBI too. Stolen bases from Duvall and Babcock rounded out the highlights on offense.
Piscotty's save, the first of his college career, provided a bookend for
Alex Honeyman's start. Honeyman churned out five innings of five-hit, three-run baseball including two strikeouts and two walks. He did not factor in the decision. Piscotty struck out two batters and walked one in the top of the ninth.
Grady Booth (2-1) was the winning pitcher after ending the eighth inning and starting the ninth inning.
Kenji Bray,
Dillon Alcouffe,
Tai Nguyen, and Matthew turner provided relief in between.
Mines (10-21, 7-10 RMAC) scored its 14 runs on 20 hits and only committed one error in the field while snapping an eight-game losing streak. Meanwhile, CSU Pueblo tallied 12 runs on 13 hits and had two fielding errors. The ThunderWolves benefited from two doubles and one home run. The Orediggers made things work with two doubles and one triple. Mines' pitching staff combined to strike out six batters while walking nine. On the other side, CSU Pueblo's arms struck out five and walked five. There was only one unearned run in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Two first-inning runs for CSU Pueblo did not faze Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers quickly jumped in the driver's seat and erupted for four runs in the bottom of the first. Duvall started the inning with a leadoff single. Then, Bilter and Babcock hit back-to-back singles which plated Duvall and put the home team on the board. A fielder's choice and a ThunderWolves' error brought in Bilter. A one-run single off the bat of Hummel gave Mines a 3-2 lead. Holcomb singled and drove in Pina to make it 4-2.
The Orediggers added to their lead with one run in the third inning and three in the fourth inning. A pair of two-out singles by Hummel and Holcomb manufactured the single run. Four hits in the bottom of the fourth fueled the three-run outburst which was highlighted by a Dunagan double, Babcock's single, and a knock from Pina. The surge also offset one run for the visitors in the top of the fourth inning. The CSU Pueblo rally started in the sixth inning with a one-out home run. Another run off a seventh-inning double closed the gap to 8-5. After the stretch, Duvall scored
Alex Freund and Bilter hit a single that resulted in two more runs. The 11-5 lead seemed comfortable, until it wasn't.
In the top of the eighth inning, CSU Pueblo put its leadoff batter on base. He eventually scored on a sacrifice fly which was also the second out of the inning. However, Mines struggled to find the last out. Six runs and four hits later, the ThunderWolves had taken a 12-11 lead, but the advantage didn't last long. Easter's lone double started the home half of the eighth frame. Pina followed with a single which put runners on first and third. The Pack got two quick outs, including catching a baserunner stealing, but the Orediggers weren't done. Freund singled up the middle and brought in Easter to tie the game, 12-12.
Justin Kubojiri worked a two-out walk to put baserunners at first and second base. That was when Duvall delivered a two-out triple to right-center field on a 1-1 count and pushed Mines ahead, 14-12. In the top of the ninth, Piscotty took over for Booth in the middle of an at-bat with two balls and no strikes. The freshman delivered two quick strikes, and then the lights at Jim Darden Field went black due to a technical glitch. After a 15-minute delay, the lights came back on. Despite the 2-2 count, the CSU Pueblo batter walked putting the winning run at the plate. However, Piscotty did not disappoint. He fanned the next two batters and clinched the series-opening win for Mines.
