Levin Scores, Mines Bested By CUI

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team dropped the second match of their first weekend of the season at Stermole Stadium Saturday to Concordia University Irvine by a final score of 4-1. Avi Levin teamed up with Murray Peart to score in the second half for the Orediggers (0-3-1), but explosive plays by the Golden Eagles (2-1-1) proved to be the difference in the match.

There was no shortage of action and aggression early, as four yellow cards were issued in the opening 30 minutes. After Noah Hildreth saved a shot by Andrew Jun in the 26th minute and a shot by Bryan Maldonado smashed off the left post, Marcus Ozmai scored first for CUI after Jun forced a turnover deep in the Orediggers' own end in the 29th minute. Hildreth rebounded with a save against Maldonado shortly after as the score remained 1-0 after 45 minutes.

Shortly after banging a shot off the crossbar, Jun made it a 2-0 contest for the visitors in the 68th minute when a long ball gathered on the endline by Maldonado was played back to the center of the box for the shot and goal. A similar play followed in the 73rd minute, when Jonas Pearson scored on another long ball that was played in from Hugo Viramontes that made it a three-goal game. Mines broke up the shutout in the 81st minute when Murray Peart ran down a ball from Cody O'Brien on the end line and played it back to the top of the six for Avi Levin, who finished on the near post to make it 3-1. The final goal of the afternoon came in the 88th minute when George Peterson won a physical battle inside the box for the ball, spinning and firing a hard shot across goal to the near post as the score moved to 4-1.
