John Crowley won the 165-pound bracket and Colorado School of Mines had
six other top-four finishes to wrap up a terrific day at the Hastings College Cusatis Open.
The lower weights led the way for Mines as Matthew Lavengood, Noah Au-Yeung, and Lukas Erickson were runners-up at 125, 133, and 141, respectively. Zach Gracia (125) and Travis Torres (141) snagged third-place finishes, and Caleb Micho finished fourth at 133 pounds.
Crowley cruised through the 165-pound bracket, winning his opener with a 15-5 major decision before beating Ricky Padilla of Air Force Prep 3-1 in the semis. He punctuated his day with a 1:06 fall over Concordia's Walker Fisher in the final.
Mines had the second- and third-place finishers at 125 with Lavengood earning a finals spot thanks to a 6-4 decision and a 1:25 fall against Collin Fox of Concordia. He hung in with Nebraska's Mitch Maginnis in the final but lost 7-3. Gracia made it to the semis before losing to Maginnis, but earned a 9-7 sudden victory win on a takedown of Concordia's Chad Skokowski for third.
Au-Yeung had the best showing of his young career to lead the pair of placewinners at 133. Au-Yeung won three tight matches – all of them decisions by two points or less – before falling to Chadron's Joshua Miller in the final 5-3. Micho earned fourth after wrestling back to the consolation final, going 4-2 on the day.
At 141 pounds, Lukas Erickson won his first four matches, including two falls with one coming at the buzzer and another with three seconds left. His other two wins were majors before he lost to Colton McCrystal of Nebraska by fall in the final. Torres earned a tech fall and fall to face McCrystal in the quarters, but lost and had to wrestle back to the consolation final, where he won by forfeit after an 8-6 decision against Hasting's Taylor Rich.
Ryan Carpenter was another highlight at 149, going 3-2 with an appearance in the consolation semis. Brandon Saunders also went 3-2 at 184 pounds, advancing to the consolation semis.
Mines continues its season at Chadron State Thursday night with a 6 p.m. start.
