GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines scored 35 points in the first quarter and never looked back, rolling 56-28 past first-place South Dakota Mines at Marv Kay Stadium.
Justin Dvorak became the RMAC's all-time passing touchdowns leader with one of the most complete performances of his career, passing for five touchdowns and 324 yards and running for 115 yards and two scores.Â
Brody Oliver's two touchdowns helped him break the Mines and NCAA Division II tight ends' single-season receiving touchdowns record.
The Orediggers (5-2, 4-2 RMAC) racked up 693 yards of offense in all, including a season-high 369 yards on the ground. Defensively, Mines did its best to contain the RMAC's #2-rated offense, holding the Hardrockers to 28 points and 441 yards of offense, including only 118 on the ground.
Drew Stephon and
Jalen Champagne each had interceptions.
Pushed by a terrific offensive line effort, Mines ran for 369 yards, its highest ground total since 1992, led by Dvorak and
Sam Seeton (114 yards). Zach Guy added 62 yards on five carries,
Cameron Mayberry 54 yards on seven totes, and
Josh Odom 36 yards on three attempts.
It was a blink-and-miss it first quarter as Mines laid 35 points on the visitors. Dvorak walked in from 13 yards out to start the quarter before
Ty Young caught a one-handed leaping touchdown from 16 yards out, and Dvorak broke free from 32 yards away to score midway through the quarter. Young caught his second of the quarter after that before
Zac Guy broke a tackle and hit the end zone from 25 yards out to set the lead at 35-0 before the teams even switched ends.
South Dakota Mines made it interesting with a pair of touchdowns from Dorian Cowart and Macus Sanchez, but Oliver found his rhythm late in the first half with scoring hauls of 30 and 46 yards, and the Orediggers found themselves up 49-14 at the break.
A more subdued second half saw only three scoring plays as the Hardrocks received touchdowns by Isaiah Manley and Sanchez, and
Riley Hoff's 11-yard strike from Dvorak capped the Orediggers' day early in the fourth quarter.
Defensively,
Chris Brockman's 12 tackles led the Orediggers while
