How It Happened
Colorado School of Mines bounced back in a big way with a big 4-0 victory at Westminster on Sunday, October 9 in Salt Lake City.
Mines (6-4-2, 5-2-1) re-found its offensive mojo and blasted an aggressive Griffins (3-8, 2-6) squad with goals from
Nikolaus Grotz,
Ashi Geberkidane,
John Haist and
Trevor Amann.
Westminster drew first blood in the 16' when the Griffins' Jaden Olson created a bit of space and put a goal inside the top right post. From there though it was all Mines as the Orediggers put two up on the scoreboard before halftime.
First, junior midfielder
Nikolaus Grotz finally put in his first goal of the season in the 26'.
Ashi Geberkidane followed him just four minutes later when he nodded in a
Bryce Townsend cross to put the Orediggers up 2-1 at intermission.
Mines kept the offensive pressure going into the second half, and it finally paid off in the 55'. Grotz took a free kick from 35 yards out to the left of the goal. He sent a deep cross into the box where
John Haist skied above the pack and headed in his fourth goal of the season.
Then, just over three minutes later, Haist and
Trevor Amann found themselves on the break in a 2v1 situation. Haist was easily able to feed Amann to put Mines up 4-1 in the 59'. That was all the Orediggers needed as the defense locked down and controlled the rest of the contest.
