Robert Gambrell and seven placewinners overall, Colorado School of Mines had a fantastic day at the UNK Holiday Inn Open last Saturday. In addition to Gambrell's win,
Brandon Saunders was the 197-pound Amateur runner-up, and
Jacob Gerken took third in the 149-pound Elite bracket, as did
Ethan Ruby in the 157-pound Amateur flight.
Lukas Erickson was fourth at 141,
Ben Krantz was fifth at 184, and
Ian Cheatum - who had the tournament's most falls with four - was fourth at 285.
LEADING THE WAY
Robert Gambrell leads the Orediggers this season with a 12-1 record;
Rocky Michaelson is behind him at 10-4 and
Noah Au-Yeung is 9-4.
Matthew Lavengood and
Brandon Saunders co-lead the team with five falls apiece – both have five of their six wins coming via pin.
LAST YEAR
Mines fell 32-12 at Chadron State last season. The Orediggers were buoyed by
Lukas Erickson's 9-3 sudden-victory win against Brock Thumm (with a potential rematch on Sunday), and
Ethan Ruby won against John Porter 6-4 (also a potential rematch), while
Paul Wilson pinned Stuart Hircock. Chadron earned bonus points in five of its seven wins.
IN THE RANKINGS
Mines was well-represented in the first D2wrestle.com Super Region 4 rankings, checking in at #5 in the team standings with nine ranked individuals. At 125 pounds, Zach Gracia (17-11 in 2015-16) is sixth in SR4, and
Noah Au-Yeung (13-12) is fifth at 133 pounds.
Lukas Erickson (13-10) appears at fifth in the 141-pound rankings with
Jacob Gerken (10-13) in the same spot at 149 and
Ethan Ruby (14-13) also fifth at 157. At the upper weights,
Keenan Willits (14-12) is sixth in the 165-pound poll, and
Robert Gambrell is eighth at 174.
Rocky Michaelson (16-12) had Mines' best showing at third in the 184-pound rankings as he looks to move up from 174, and
Ian Cheatum (11-10) is sixth in the heavyweight ranking.
For Chadron, 133-pounder Taylor Summers is ranked #10 in the nation preseason. Regionally, the Eagles are ranked #9 with six individuals - Summers (#2), Luke Zeiger (#4, 141), Jake Anderson (#4, 157), Chance Helmick (#5, 174), Shan Rodenburg (#5, 184), and Cooper Cogdill (#5, 285) in the regional individual rankings.
