GOLDEN, Colo. - #9 Colorado School of Mines erased a 10-point deficit with less than a minute to go in regulation, then battled through two overtimes to beat Fort Hays State, 109-101, in their home opener at Lockridge Arena.
The Orediggers (3-0) trailed by 10 with 47 seconds left before an improbable and wild final minute ended with
Ben Sonnefeld hitting three free throws to force overtime.
Luke Schroepfer drained 28 points while
Ben Sonnefeld had a career night scoring 25, and
Mason Baker scored a career-high 17 off the bench including eight straight Mines points in that final minute of regulation. Hadley Gillum had an outstanding game for FHSU, scoring 36 points to go with 10 rebounds.
After a back-and-forth game, Mines found themselves training 80-70 with Kyler Kinnamon at the line with 51 seconds remaining in the second half. Kinnamon missed his second try, and Baker hit a quick layup at the other end to force a Tiger timeout. An intentional foul sent Trey O'Neil to the line, where he made one, and Baker then drained a fallaway three to cut the lead to 81-75. Kinnamon then missed both free-throw attempts with 32 ticks to go before Baker hit another trifecta to make it an 81-78 game. Keshawn Wilson made one of two foul shots before a Sonnefeld baseline pass ended in
Michael Glen's dunk with six seconds left, putting Mines down 82-80. Aaron Nicholson missed his first foul shot but made his second, and with three seconds to go, Sonnefeld was fouled while shooting a three; he calmly made all three free throws to knot the game at 83-83 and head to overtime.
The first overtime ended at 93-93 after neither side led by more than a basket, but a 4-0 Mines run to start the second extra period - thanks to buckets by Baker and Sonnefeld - gave Mines control of the game as FHSU went cold from the floor. Wilson's three-pointer with 3:05 left cut the Mines lead to one, but Sonnefeld,
Luke Golter, and Schroepfer combined for a 7-0 run that shut the door as Mines won 109-101.
Mines shot an outstanding 56.9 percent for the game, and was 33-of-46 at the line. The Orediggers also sank 10 of 21 three-point tries; FHSU shot 41.6 percent and was 28-of-29 at the line. Mines had eight blocks in the game, including four by
Ben Clare and three by
Zach Rusk.
The Orediggers stay at home to face Nebraska-Kearney Saturday at 7 p.m.
