Orediggers Come Back To Beat UCCS 79-77

GOLDEN, Colo. - A 7-0 run in the final 1:16 helped #6 Colorado School of Mines erase a deficit and beat UCCS, 79-77, in a back-and-forth battle on Sunday.

Michael Glen sank a pair of game-sealing free throws with 10 seconds remaining as the Mountain Lions led as late as the 1:17 mark before Luke Schroepfer's three-pointer sparked the decisive run.

The Orediggers (11-1, 5-1 RMAC) shot only 39.7 percent but scored 28 points off 18 Mountain Lion (4-8, 1-5 RMAC) turnovers. Schroepfer drained 21 points while Ben Clare had 11 with nine rebounds, and Mason Baker scored 10 off the bench.

A rugged first half saw Mines lead most of the period on the way to a 41-33 halftime advantage. The lead hovered around eight until UCCS hit an 8-2 run to cut the Mines lead to two, and they continued to keep pace until a jumper by Jonathan Barnes and Brandon Malone's three-pointer tied it 69-69 with 3:57 to go.

That set off a wild final four minutes with UCCS taking their first lead since the opening basket on Isaiah Wilson's three at the 3:11 mark. Schroepfer made two foul shots to tie it back up before another Malone longball put the visitors up 75-72 with 1:48 to go, but the remainder of the game was all Mines. Justin Smith's charge negated a basket and led to Schroepfer's three with 1:16 left, and Baker went to the line to put the Orediggers up 77-75 with 22 seconds left. Padiet Wang was picked off by Zach Rusk in the lane with 10 seconds left and Glen was immediately fouled, going to the line to seal it up. Brandon Malone missed a pair of free throws with less than a second remaining and Barnes had an academic tip-in at the buzzer.

Barnes led UCCS with 20 points and seven rebounds. Smith had 14 off the bench.

Schroepfer's day took him to 983 career points as he bids to hit the 1,000 mark. The redshirt senior has averaged 9.7 points per game over his career, including a career-high 15.6 points per game this season.

Mines will return to action Dec. 30 at Westminster.
