Softball Battles In Two Tight Games

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Colorado School of Mines dropped a pair of tight games on Saturday, falling 6-5 in extra innings to Southwestern Oklahoma State before losing 5-3 to Missouri S&T.

The games were played as part of Midwestern State's Round Robin Tournament. Mines concludes the season-opening bracket Sunday with games against Newman (9:30 a.m. CST) and Southwest Baptist (12 p.m. CST).

GAME 1 - Southwestern Oklahoma State 6, Mines 5 (8 inn.)
A wild bottom-of-the-seventh comeback by Mines forced extra innings, but two SWOSU runs in the extra frame made the difference in the day's first game.

Mines trailed 4-1 heading into their final at-bat but plated three to tie it after trailing since the second inning. After spotting the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead, Mines chipped away with Katie Leiker's single to score Sonoma Toot in the fourth, but the Orediggers still found themselves down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Leiker led the inning off with a single and Kara Walling beat out a sac bunt attempt, letting Brielle Asato's single load the bases with no outs. Paige Noehring then smacked a single to center that scored two runs, and after a pitching change, Asato scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Clara Larson's double later in the inning put Dani Valerio on third with a chance to win it, but Miranda Grover got two outs to end the inning and go to extras.

In the eight, with the international tiebreak rule in effect, SWOSU quickly scored after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, but tacked on another run off a wild pitch to lead 6-4. In the bottom half, Mines had Toot placed on second and she scored after Pua Fujinaga's sacrifice and Leiker's RBI single. Mines couldn't work their magic twice, however, as Leiker was caught stealing and Asato grounded out to end the game.

Mines combined three pitchers with Maddie Rogers (2.2 IP) getting the start. Claire Stringfellow made her collegiate debut and was effective in 5.0 innings pitched, allowing only 1 earned, while Hallie Smith threw the final out of the eighth.

Noehring and Leiker each knocked in two runs, as Leiker went 3-for-4 at the plate and Noehring 2-for-4.

GAME 2 - Missouri S&T 5, Mines 3
Missouri S&T outlastest Mines, 5-3, in a battle to complete Mines' second day in Texas.

The Orediggers took an early lead when Kara Jones' double scored Katie Leiker in the second, but MST's Hannah Franceschini homered and Monica Weiss doubled in two runs in the bottom half to lead 5-1.

Mines chipped away the lead with RBI singles from Sonoma Toot and Leiker in the third and fifth, respectively, to cut the lead to 4-3, but MST responded with Carley Hamann's sacrifice fly in the sixth to extend their lead to 5-3.

Hallie Smith went the distance for Mines, allowing four earned with two strikeouts. Avery English struck out five and allowed two earned in the win for Missouri S&T, retiring the final seven Orediggers she faced.

Clara Larson went 2-for-4 in the game and Leiker was 2-for-3 to finish a 5-for-7 day. Stefanie Brunello made her first career appearance as a pinch runner and stole a base in the fourth.
