SPEARFISH, S.D. - Colorado School of Mines took two from Black Hills State, getting out early in game one but needing a seventh-inning comeback to win game two.
The Orediggers (15-5, 12-2 RMAC) moved to within a game of first place in the RMAC with the two wins after CCU and previously-unbeaten MSU Denver split their doubleheader.
GAME ONE - Mines 4, Black Hills State 1
Mines scored in four different innings as they combined
Maddie Rogers and
Claire Stringfellow to hold Black Hills State to four hits in a 4-1 win.
The Orediggers had only five hits of their own, but they made them count as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never trailed.
Sonoma Toot's first-inning triple scored
Paige Noehring to take an early lead, and
Clara Larson doubled it in the third with a single to plate
Kelsey Buechler.
Taylor Klauser grounded in
Boston Ludlow in the fourth, and
Brielle Asato bolted for home off
Kara Walling's steal of second in the seventh. BHSU's only run came in the fifth on a Claire Ferguson single.
Rogers and Stringfellow split the game as Stringfellow (6-1) earned the win with 3.2 IP of relief.
GAME TWO - Mines 4, Black Hills State 3
Kara Jones' two-run single in the top of the seventh proved to be the edge as Mines won 4-3 in the day's second game.
Mines had to overcome a 3-1 BHSU lead after the second inning following Maddie London's three-run home run. That gave them the lead following
Katie Leiker's RBI fielder's choice to score
Kelsey Buechler in the first.
Mines chipped away in the fifth as Leiker stole second and Buechler came home on a failed pickoff attempt at third, making it 3-2 Yellow Jackets. In the seventh,
Clara Larson drew a lead-off walk and moved over to third after
Sonoma Toot's sacrifice and Leiker's single; Leiker then stole second before Jones smacked a single to right field, scoring both runs to go ahead.
Hallie Smith then worked a 1-2-3 bottom half to win it for the Orediggers. Smith (6-3) struck out a career-high nine in going the distance.
