Schroepfer Scores 1,000th As Westminster Tops Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. - Westminster's late run gave them a 78-73 win over #12 Colorado School of Mines at Lockridge Arena Saturday afternoon.

Luke Schroepfer scored his 1,000th career point as part of a 14-point effort, but the Griffins (11-2, 7-2 RMAC) avenged last weekend's one-point loss to the Orediggers (12-2, 6-2 RMAC) thanks to a 7-3 run to close the game led by Dayon Goodman's 34-point game.

Mason Baker led the Orediggers with 18 off the bench, while Ben Sonnefeld had 11 points to go with five assists and Michael Glen scored 10 with five boards.

It was an engaging first half that ended 39-39 and featured nine ties and four lead changes as neither team led by more than five. Westminster came out of halftime on a 16-8 run, however to take control of the game after Goodman scored eight straight points for the Griffins to lead 55-47 at the 11:36 mark, their largest advantage to that point.

The Griffins would later put their lead to as much as 11 after Goodman's three-pointer with 7:29 left, but a 13-2 run by Mines over the next 2:44 would make it a whole new ballgame. Baker and Glen sparked the run at the line before Schroepfer's three-pointer and three-point plays by Baker and Glen tied it 69-69 with 4:45 remaining. The Orediggers, however, would be held without a field goal for the next four-plus minutes, with Tanner Newbold's layup putting the visitors ahead and a dagger three-pointer by Jarred Laws making it a two-possesion game late.
