DURANGO, Colo. - Record-setting performances by
Brody Oliver and
Cameron Mayberry led #9 Colorado School of Mines in a 44-14 romp at Fort Lewis to remain unbeaten in 2018.
Oliver became the RMAC's all-time leader in receiving touchdowns, and Mayberry broke the Mines program rushing yards record as the Orediggers (7-0, 7-0 RMAC) overcame a slow start to stifle the Skyhawks (1-6, 1-6 RMAC) in Durango. Mines won its 11th consecutive game dating back to 2017, tied for the second-longest streak in program history.
Quarterback
Isaac Harker was 32-of-47 for 345 yards and five touchdowns, producing a pair of 100-yard receivers in
Riley Hoff (11 rec., 134 yards) and Oliver (9 rec., 127 yards) as Oliver caught four of Harker's five scores.
As impressive as Mines' offense was, the Oredigger defense was busy producing arguably its best all-around game of the year with three interceptions - two by
Anthony Makransky and another by
Miguel Rosendo - and its third safety of the year in limiting FLC to only 188 yards of offense.
Mines' offense had a slow start with three straight punts to begin the game, but still got on the board first thanks to the defense. The Skyhawks had a high snap go into the end zone on their first possession, and
Logan Bock took down quarterback Nick McNamee for the two points as McNamee covered up to save a touchdown. Fort Lewis scored later in the first quarter on Xavier Thibodeaux's 35-yard touchdown score, but the Orediggers would completely take over the game from there.
It started with Makransky's first interception leading to Oliver's RMAC-record-setting seven-yard grab, and a quick out by the defense led to a 26-yard strike from Harker to Oliver to take a 16-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Oliver made it three in the quarter with an eight-yard catch late, and Mines led 23-7 at the break.
The Orediggers put the game away with a 21-point third quarter sparked again by a defensive turnover. Rosendo's interception on the second play of the half gave Mines the ball on the Fort Lewis three-yard line after a 44-yard return, and following a penalty, Mayberry rumbled into the end zone from eight yards, breaking the school yardage record in the process. Harker then tacked on touchdown throws to Oliver (18 yards) and Hoff (22 yards) later in the quarter to put the game out of reach at 44-7. FLC opened the fourth quarter with Erik Ornduff's touchdown pass to Arealous Hughes to leave it at 44-14.
NOTABLES
- Oliver entered the game tied with Nebraska-Kearney's Richie Ross for the RMAC receiving touchdowns record at 50; Ross' mark had stood since 2005. Oliver is the NCAA's active all-divisions leader in career touchdowns, with the next closest player, Tiffin's Charles Holland, at 37 entering this weekend.
- Mayberry, only a redshirt junior, surpassed Greg Marshall's long-standing program rushing yards record of 2,576 yards that he set from 1989 to 1992.
- Mines' 11 wins equals a stretch from 2013-14 and trails only 14 straight in 2003-04 for the most in school history.
- Oliver's game marked the sixth time in program history a Mines receiver caught four or more touchdowns; Oliver owns three of those, with five vs. Adams State earlier this year and four against New Mexico Highlands in 2016.
- For the fourth time this season, Harker produced two 100+ yard receivers, and for the third time it was the combination of Oliver and Hoff. They are the only duo on NCAA Division II with 2,000+ career receiving yards apiece as Oliver is now at 3,441 and Hoff 2,154.
- Oliver moved up to sixth on the RMAC career yardage list, and is now only 121 yards away from setting the Mines record which is held by Justin Gallas (2002-05).
- The offensive line kept Mines quarterbacks sack-free for the third consecutive game. Mines has not allowed a sack in 132 straight passing downs.
- The Mines offense was methodical in controlling the game, and as a result had the season's most lopsided time of possession at 35:27.
- Bock's safety was his second of the season and Mines' third. He also blocked a punt in the third quarter to go with a sack and a team-high six tackles.
-
RJ Phillips added Mines' other sack as he had three stops in all.
- The Mines defense was only on the field for 57 plays and held Fort Lewis to 125 yards passing and 63 yards rushing.
- The Orediggers have scored points on defense or special teams in five consecutive games. Mines' three safeties this season are a program record in the NCAA Division II era dating to 1992.
-
Scott Marshall had a fine day kicking, putting all seven of his kickoffs out of the end zone and averaging 41.6 yards per punt with a long of 69 yards. Marshall was 6-of-6 on PATs as well.
