Fort Hays Tips Mines In Overtime, 75-71

HAYS, Kan. - Colorado School of Mines forced overtime, but Fort Hays State held on for a 75-71 win in non-conference play on Saturday.

The Orediggers (1-2) received double-digit scoring from all five starters led by Ben Sonnefeld's 17 and Mason Baker's 15. Brady Werth dropped 27 for the Tigers (1-2) to go with 11 rebounds, and Devin Davis had 15 off the bench.

The game was tight throughout as neither side led by more than two baskets at any point. Mines' largest lead was six after a Sonnefeld three-pointer with 12:31 left in regulation, but FHSU answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead, and the two teams traded baskets for the rest of the second half. Ben Clare's layup with 1:40 left made it 61-59 Mines but Werth answered with his own bucket seconds later to tie it 61-61. Mines ended up with a three-point look to win it at the buzzer but missed to send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, FHSU started with four straight free throws and a Werth bucket, but a 5-0 Mines run on a Michael Glen jumper and Sonnefeld three-pointer cut the Tiger lead to 67-66. Marcus Cooper's and-one, however, set the momentum in the home side's favor, and two more Werth free throws put FHSU up 72-68 with 1:09 to go. A Baker three-pointer with 18 seconds left cut it to a one-point game, but Mines was forced to foul and Kyler Kinnamon and Cooper hit their free throws to secure the win.
