GOLDEN, Colo. – Senior pitcher
Jake Englehart had his best outing of the season Wednesday as the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team completed its sweep of Sioux Falls with a 13-6 win at Jim Darden Field.
Englehart (1-0) carried a perfect game into the fifth inning and a one-hitter into the seventh frame as he earned his first win of the season. The righty finished his day after 7.0 innings of work, surrendering just three runs on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Sam Slusser and
Owen Pigati also appeared in relief for Mines.
At the plate, power was the name of the game as the Orediggers hit four more home runs.
Trevor Kehe mashed his eighth tater of the year, finishing the day 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI.
Walter Pennington also hit his eighth tank of the year and went 3-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and a double.
John Howard and
Colton Wardle also collected multiple hits while
Derek Daly jacked his second bomb of the season.
The first 4.2 innings were all Orediggers (13-5) as Englehart sat the Cougars (0-10) down in order with five strikeouts, including striking out the side in the third. At the plate, Mines worked three runs in the opening inning thanks to a USF error. Daly and Kehe homered in the fourth to spark a four-run, four-hit frame.
Sioux Falls broke up the perfect game with a two-out, solo home run in the fifth inning, but Englehart bounced back with a perfect sixth inning. Three Oredigger runs in the bottom of the sixth put Mines in the drivers seat, 10-1.
The Cougars managed five runs in the final five innings including two more home runs. However, Mines added three runs of insurance in the eighth to clinch the win.
