Orediggers Split Doubleheader with New Mexico Highlands

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team claimed a 14-3 win in game one of its doubleheader Saturday before falling 6-3 in game two against New Mexico Highlands.

Trevor Kehe led the Orediggers offensively, hitting .625 on the day with a home run and two doubles while scoring four and driving in three. Jace Selsor was also outstanding as he went 4-for-7 with three runs and a walk. Mikey Gangwish hit his third home run of the season, finishing the day with three runs and four RBI.

Walter Pennington (1-1) started game one and got his first win of the season behind 5.0 innings of work. He gave up three runs on five hits while striking out six. Toby Scoles (0-1) started game two and was dealt his first loss of the season in his first decision. Scoles pitched 4.1 innings, surrendering five runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks with one strikeout. For NMHU, Dakota Pacheco (1-1) took the loss in game one while Kyle Bledsole (3-3) earned the win in game two.

Game One – Mines 14, NMHU 3
Kehe opened the scoring in the opening frame with a two-run bomb to straightaway center field, and Mines (6-4, 2-1 RMAC) rolled from there. The Orediggers scored in every inning as they ran away from the Cowboys (5-10, 1-2 RMAC). Gangwish hit his home run in the third inning to make it 4-0, Mines.

Highlands broke up the shutout in the fifth inning. A walk, a balk and a double helped the Cowboys put up three runs in the top half but it would not be enough as Max Moxley and Owen Starr came out of the bullpen with 2.0 innings of no-hit, shutout relief.

Game Two – NMHU 6, Mines 3
Mines struck first again in game two, taking advantage of a NMHU error as Pennington came in to score, unearned. The Cowboys followed suit in the fourth inning as they scored on an Orediggers' error to make it 1-1.

Griffin Jones and Philip Van Zale hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning to retake the lead for Mines. However, four Cowboy runs in the fifth inning proved too much. The Orediggers staged a rally in the bottom of seventh, scoring one run before NMHU's Preston Inman came in to clinch the win and earn the save.
