GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader Saturday for the first time this season, falling to Colorado Mesa 11-5 and 7-6.
Despite the two losses,
Mikey Gangwish was stellar the plate, batting .667 with four runs on four hits while slugging 1.833 with two home runs and double. The performance made Gangwish Mines' single-season record holder in total bases with 144 on the year.
Jace Selsor hit .500 over the two games while
Trevor Kehe hit two dingers and
Derek Daly hit one.
On the mound,
Walter Pennington (5-3) made the start and took the loss for Mines (29-12, 22-9 RMAC) in game one.
Owen Pigati (1-0) made the start in game two but did not factor in the decision despite seven strikeouts.
Sam Slusser (1-4) wore the loss in relief while four other Oredigger pitchers appeared in relief on the day. Reagan Todd (3-1) earned the win for Colorado Mesa (31-13, 22-9 RMAC) in the opener and Tanner Herdt (2-1) got the win in relief in game two.
Game One – Mesa 11, Mines 5
The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. CMU scored four runs in the second inning and six more in the fifth for a 10-1 lead. Gangwish's solo shot in the fourth frame broke up the shutout.
Kehe attempted to spark a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with his three-run bomb. However, only one more run would come across the plate as Colorado Mesa closed out the win.
Game Two – Mesa 7, Mines 6
Defense and pitching reigned supreme through the first two innings as both teams put up zeros. Then, Mines turned on the power in the third inning as Kehe and Gangwish hit back-to-back jacks, making it 2-0 Orediggers. Daly's solo home run capped a four-run fourth inning to make it 6-0.
Colorado Mesa stormed back with seven unanswered runs to take the lead. Jordan Stubbings led the rally with a home run and a bases-clearing double.
Mines put the tying run on third base in the bottom of the seventh as
Joe Popp led off with a single. Unfortunately for the Orediggers, the comeback was not meant to be as the Mavericks recorded the final outs without incident.
