Mines Falls to Mesa on Senior Day

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team recognized its 11 seniors Sunday at Jim Darden Field but could not pull off the win as it dropped the series finale, 21-8.

Jerod Rodriguez, Griffin Jones, Colton Wardle, Drew Burman, Jake Ekstrom, Jake Englehart, Max Moxley, Cameron Maxey, Caleb Thomas, Jake Roberts and Matt Martin competed in their final regular-season home game. All 11 appeared in Sunday's finale as a total of 22 Orediggers got into the game.

At the plate, Jace Selsor led the way with three hits and two RBI. Mikey Gangwish and Joe Popp both hit home runs while Phil VanZale finished with a multiple-hit day.

On the mound, Drew Burman (6-3) made the start and suffered the loss. Taylor Prokopis (4-1) got the win for Colorado Mesa.

The Mavericks (32-13, 23-9 RMAC) were hot from the start with 10 runs in the first inning. Mines (29-13, 22-10 RMAC) made its best attempt to rally as Gangwish's two-run shot in the bottom of the first got the Orediggers on the board.

Mines added two more runs in the fourth thanks to a pair of doubles and Popp's three-run shot in the fifth brought the Orediggers' run total to seven. However, 11 runs for CMU over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings sealed the deal.
