DENVER – The bats came alive for the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Regis as the Orediggers charged to a split with the Rangers, dropping game one 8-0 while winning game two 9-4.
Ben Stinson led the charge with a team-high three RBI on a squad-best three hits as he batted .750 on the day.
Trevor Kehe batted .375 over two games with two runs on three hits including two doubles.
Jace Selsor hit his seventh home run of the season and scored twice.
Derek Daly rounded out Mines' (30-14, 23-11 RMAC) extra-base hits with a double.
On the mound,
Tyler Blomster (7-0) started game two and pitched a complete-game victory to remain undefeated on the season. He struck out three batters and allowed just four runs on seven hits.
Owen Pigati (1-1) got the start and wore the loss in game one despite striking out seven while surrendering just two earned runs on five hits.
Toby Scoles and
Jake Roberts appeared in relief for Mines. Brad Thoutt (9-3) got the win for Regis (26-20, 18-14 RMAC) in game one and Noah Gotsis (6-4) took the loss in game two.
Game One – Regis 8, Mines 0
Pigati turned in a one-two-three first inning thanks to two strikeouts and a runner caught stealing by
Mikey Gangwish. However, Regis plated two runs in the second inning and another in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Mines could not get the bats going, recording just four hits in the nine-inning affair. The Rangers padded their lead with five more runs over the last three innings including two home runs to insure the victory.
Game Two – Mines 9, Regis 4
The Orediggers' offense started fast and furious thanks to Selor's leadoff home run in the top of the first frame. Kehe and Gangwish followed up with back-to-back hits before Regis could get its first out of the game. A sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly made it 2-0 and Stinson stepped in with a RBI single to make it 3-0. Mines finished the opening frame with five runs on seven hits.
Regis responded in the bottom half by loading the bases but managed just one run as
Phil VanZale made a diving catch in right field to end the inning. Blomster was nearly untouchable for the next four innings, allowing just two baserunners with one of them caught stealing by Gangwish.
Mines added four runs in the top of the sixth to make it 9-1. The runs proved much-needed as the Rangers used a three-run home run in the sixth to cut into the Orediggers' lead. However, Blomster stopped the rally short with a strikeout and three more fly balls to finish off the complete game.
