DENVER – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team closed the regular season on a winning note Saturday with its doubleheader sweep at Regis Baseball Field. Mines took game one 9-4 and game two 7-6 as it clinched another series victory in the RMAC.
Trevor Kehe was the big bat for the Orediggers (32-14, 25-11 RMAC), scoring four times on four hits including a double and a home run. Kehe finished the day batting .667 and slugging 1.333 with two RBI.
Ben Stinson also came up big for a second-straight day, driving in six runs on three hits with a double.
Blaise Sims and
Jace Selsor scored three runs each over the two games and Selsor drove in four as Sims smacked two doubles.
Matt Martin (2-0) was the starting pitcher in game one and tossed his way to a win over 6.0 innings with six strikeouts.
Jake Englehart (4-0) was the starter and victor in game two behind 5.2 innings of work with three strikeouts.
Gabe Garvens earned his fourth save of the season in game one and
Walter Pennington got his first save of the year in game two. Cobe Karhoff (2-5) and Patrick Kenny (1-2) took the losses for Regis (26-22, 18-16 RMAC).
Game One – Mines 9, Regis 4
The Rangers stuck first with one run in the bottom of the opening frame. Mines responded in the third inning thanks to a two-run single from Selsor and a Regis error, giving the Orediggers a 3-1 lead.
Two Ranger runs tied the game in the bottom of the third. However, Mines rang up four unanswered runs over the next three innings to make it 7-3. Stinson and
Joe Popp both teamed up to drive in the runs.
Regis responded with a lone run in the seventh, but it was too little too late. Kehe's two-run homer in the eighth was the final straw as Garvens came on for the three-inning save.
Game Two – Mines 7, Regis 6
The Orediggers set the tone in the first inning, scoring three runs with two outs. Stinson drove in two with a single up the middle and a Regis error brought in the third.
Regis cut into the lead single runs in the second and third, but four runs for Mines in the fourth put the Orediggers in the driver's seat. Selsor, Stinson and
Mikey Gangwish were the responsible parties for the quad-spot on three hits.
The Rangers attempted a comeback with a pair of runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Walter Pennington would have none of it as he came out of the bullpen to clinch the win.
