Gangwish, Blomster Lead Orediggers Past #7 Mavericks
GOLDEN, Colo. – Mikey Gangwish and
Tyler Blomster had themselves a day Sunday as they led the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team past No. 7-ranked Colorado Mesa, 13-10.
Gangwish tied the program record with seven RBI as he dominated the Maverick pitchers with two doubles and two home runs. He finished the day batting .800 and slugging 2.400 while scoring three times.
Jace Selsor and
Trevor Kehe each had three hits and combined to score five times.
Colton Wardle was also dominant, scoring twice with two RBI on a program-record pair of triples.
On the mound,
Tyler Blomster (4-0) got the start and remained perfect on the season behind 8.0 innings of work with just one earned run (six total) on 11 hits. He struck out seven Mavericks and collected his fourth win in his fourth start of the year.
Gabe Garvens and
Sam Slusser both appeared in relief to close out the win. Mesa's sophomore Kyle Leahy (4-1) was dealt the first loss of his collegiate career.
Mesa (23-9, 14-5 RMAC) struck first in the opening frame with a one-out double and a two-out single to go ahead 1-0. However, Mines (20-8, 13-5 RMAC) came right back with two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Walter Pennington led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Then, Wardle hit a two-out triple to right field and came into to score on a wild pitch.
The Mavericks put up five runs in the third inning after a leadoff error by Mines.
Mikey Gangwish answered for the Orediggers with his first double of the game in the bottom of the third to make it 6-3, Mesa.
A zero in the fourth inning was the only scoreless inning of the game as Mines' bats exploded in the fifth and sixth frames. Gangwish sparked five runs in the fifth inning with a two-RBI double and accounted for all three runs in the sixth with his 10th home run of the season. Mesa's four-run rally in the ninth inning was negated by the Orediggers' single insurance runs in the seventh and eighth including Gangwish's second home run of the game.
